Responsibilities:
The incumbent will be responsible for providing individual weekly academic coaching sessions for a small number of Lakefield College School students with learning differences. The incumbent will also provide classroom back-up to classroom coaches so that they may meet students individually.
Duties will include:

  • Weekly coaching sessions with individual students to work through larger issues that are creating roadblocks towards academic success and achievement of goals.
  • Holding students accountable to their goals by supporting them in a coaching relationship, which includes the implicit belief that the individual student knows best; and an approach that seeks input from the student to determine how they want the coaching relationship to be structured and how they want the coach to respond; that helps students understand that they have the power to change their habits and methodologies around learning and that they hold the internal knowledge and resources to do so; that provides external supports and structures to help students focus on making the changes they choose, providing students with someone to be externally accountable to; and that help students recognize habits and patterns of behaviour that are impacting their learning by making these visible as a first step towards change.
  • General study skills and learning strategies instruction
  • Specific curriculum support in high school courses where needed (mathematics and/or science background preferred)
  • Researching new and valid methods and strategies (e.g. through professional development materials, websites, etc.) to assist students with learning differences in their learning, self-monitoring and management.
  • Documentation of coaching sessions and student progress for use by advisor and Guidance and Learning staff.
  • Attending meetings and retreats with the Learning Team as required.
Skills/Education:
  • Bachelor of Education
  • Special Education, Part 1 AQ preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to support curriculum concepts for Ontario high school curriculum, Grade 9 through Grade 12 university preparatory, and strong ability to meet the learning needs of individual students
  • preference given to candidates able to support mathematics and science curriculum
  • Additional qualifications for and/or experience with teaching adolescents with identified learning differences in a small group setting
Schedule:
  • 5 contact hours per week during Academic Terms. Contact hours are 6:30 - 9:00 p.m., two evenings per week during the academic year.
  • On days when the school is closed or study is cancelled, no classroom coaching sessions will be held, and no payment will be made for those days. Please note that LCS may amend this schedule with notice to better meet programming or other organizational requirements.
Contract Dates:
  • September, 2022 to June, 2023
