Job Description

Reporting to: Director, ESG

Position Summary: This position is an integral part of CAPREIT's ESG group as the ESG Manager will be making important contributions to CAPREIT's growing commitment to world class ESG and climate-related performance. The ESG Manager will work closely with CAPREIT's ESG Director, as well as across the organization, to support all aspects of CAPREIT's ESG strategy integration and stakeholder engagement programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead multiple ESG projects and initiatives through proposal, evaluation, planning, collaboration, data collection, analysis, implementation, and Collaborate with multiple departments and external consultants to develop these initiatives and prepare deliverables and progress reports.
  • Manage and evaluate company-wide analysis of ESG KPIs, metrics, and progress toward targets using CAPREIT's data management platform(s).
  • Support planning and evaluation of decarbonization targets, transition plans and communications as well as the implementation of energy, water, and waste performance improvement initiatives.
  • Draft sustainability/ESG content and reports for internal and external stakeholders including engaging with other internal teams (e.g., Operations, HR, Marketing, Finance, etc.).
  • Identify, gather, and analyze ESG data and prepare content for CAPREIT's annual ESG report and other public disclosure-related reports, ratings, and surveys following global standards (e.g., GRESB, GRI, SASB, TCFD, CDP, MSCI, Sustainalytics, ISS, etc.).
  • Help create systems, formalize processes, and establish frameworks for ESG initiatives to increase transparency, accountability, and track performance.
  • Design and facilitate working groups, workshops, and conference calls to support strategic planning, goal setting, and ESG metrics measurement and tracking.
  • Manage innovative ESG integration projects to support CAPREIT's objectives.
  • Develop of CAPREIT's ESG policies, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Support the integration of ESG into CAPREIT's Risk Management information system.
  • Plan and manage stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Examine industry and best practice trends to apply insights that support internal processes and strategic direction.
  • Other duties and project management assignments, as directed.

Professional Requirements
  • 5-7 years of relevant work experience in the sustainability sector.
  • University degree in sustainability management, business/commerce, finance, or other relevant disciplines with a basic knowledge of the investment, consulting and/or commercial real estate industry.
  • A post-secondary degree in a related field (i.e., sustainability, environmental science).
  • Experience with global reporting frameworks such as GRI, SASB, TCFD and/or GRESB.
  • Advanced knowledge of corporate governance, social, and environmental issues, preference for climate change expertise.
  • Experience with building-level energy conservation measures, measurement, and results reporting and general knowledge of energy management, energy audits, and decarbonization planning for buildings would be valued.
  • Exposure to low-carbon technologies, renewable energy technologies, smart building technologies, carbon offsetting, and RECs.
  • A good understanding of BOMA BEST, LEED, WELL, FitWel, and/or the Zero Carbon Building Standard.
  • LEED AP, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), CMVP, or other relevant credentials would be an asset.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and active interest in emerging ESG trends.
  • High level of competency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite is required.
  • French language skills would be an asset.
