Job Summary:

The Engineering Outreach Coordinator is responsible for the development and delivery of Engineering Outreach programs aimed for youth in the Grade 9-12 level. In collaboration with the Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic District School Board, the role will develop and execute a STEM plan to provide in-school and after-school learning opportunities for youth with a focus on developing digital skills to prepare students for future STEM based careers. The Engineering Outreach Coordinator will also oversee the Future Leaders in Training program to provide leadership opportunities for High-School students, fostering professional development skills that will prepare them for future work opportunities.

Nature of work:

Reporting to the Engineering Outreach Supervisor, the Engineering Outreach Coordinator is a high-energy leader who understands how to provide accessible STEM learning opportunities at the high school level. The Coordinator is able to create innovative programs that connects STEM concepts as seen in the Ontario Curriculum to post-secondary STEM education and societal challenges.

Responsibilities/accountabilities:

  • Develop agenda, activities, and programming for high school audiences.
  • Depending on specific needs, activities may be making use of past resources, or developing activities from a blank slate. Programming must be appropriate for the audience
  • Solicit and manage registration for the program, train and supervise student staff and/or student volunteers, and assess program activities.
  • Work closely with the school boards to develop a strategy for success within the program.
  • Communicate with program principals & teachers before/during/after the program as appropriate. This includes answering questions teachers may have about developing lesson plans and how to use STEM technologies in the classroom.
  • Communicate with any campus stakeholders, as needed.
  • Aware of research and/or new technologies that could impact programs.
  • Documenting the event (text and photos) and reporting on outcomes for future improvement.
  • Develop and use tools to assess success of program activities. Assessment may be used to share success with other programs through papers and conferences.
  • Events may run on weekends, evenings, and unless otherwise stated, the Program Coordinator is expected to be present for all events that they are the primary organizer of, and be reachable for all events.
  • Ensuring the safety of all program participants.
  • Training and supervision of staff and/or volunteers in a manner appropriate for the event.
  • Collect and report hours of casual staff.
  • Communicate with school boards, school administrators, and teachers to find the best way to promote programs and to help better understand the needs of the audience.
  • Communicate and promote work with other local (e.g. staff, faculty, Durham Region community) and national stakeholders (e.g. groups outside the region, Actua).
  • Prepare and deliver reports, maintain accurate records of participants, and manage data related to K-12 engineering outreach events, and any related programs.
  • Documenting engineering outreach experiences through social media and ongoing evaluation and reports.
Other office roles may include:
  • Supervision of short-term (i.e. co-op, casual hires) staff
  • Support and development of shared office resources, such as Google Apps, information sharing portal and support technology
  • Office wide administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Support of other Ontario Tech University Engineering Outreach programs, as needed.
Required Skills:
  • Have a valid class G license.
  • Has experience working with high school students and developing new ways of teaching content.
  • Has an aptitude for industrial design, engineering, computer science, tinkering, building, and/or making.
  • Is energized by talking to the public, comfortable speaking in English.
  • Serve as a positive role model for youth in urban, Indigenous, rural, and/or remote communities.
  • Can create and maintain an inclusive and safe space for ALL youth.
  • Has a strong work ethic, and a demonstrated ability to be professional and punctual at all events.
  • Is confident using (or willing to learn) Microsoft Office suite of applications (Word, PowerPoint and Excel), Google Tools, Maker Tools (3D Printers, Laser Cutters, Arduinos, etc.), basic programming languages (Python, C, C++, HTML), and updating social media channels.
  • Thinks critically and solves problems creatively and efficiently.
  • Can effectively communicate technical concepts to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Previous experience with Actua or Actua Network Member is considered an asset.
  • Must be able to deliver educational programs in a classroom environment in English. (Ability to speak French and/or an Indigenous language is an asset).
  • Must have a clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check and valid First Aid and CPR-C certification.
  • Are able to lift and move objects as heavy as 50 lbs.
  • Must be willing to ensure that all vaccines are up to date as per the federal vaccination guide for child care workers.
Required Education:
  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Science, a STEM field, or Education.
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.
  • Verification of Academic credentials may be required
Required Experience:
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience required
  • Experience in an academic environment, including knowledge of university policies and procedures
  • Has experience engaging youth in educational or recreational experiences.
  • Previous experience with Actua or Actua Network Member is considered an asset.
  • Must be able to deliver educational programs in a classroom environment in English.
(Ability to speak French and/or an Indigenous language is an asset)
