The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta\xe2\x80\x99s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta\xe2\x80\x99s competitive wholesale electricity market. The Market Design team is looking for an energetic, reliable, professional individual to join their team in the Economist role. In this role you will be responsible for conducting research and analysis on various aspects of Alberta\xe2\x80\x99s electricity market design. You will assist in developing defendable economic impact analysis, determining efficiency considerations in rule design, market design and operations for energy and ancillary services market rules as required by the AESO.

Additionally you will be responsible for reviewing current economic and industry news and reports and, when appropriate, provide summary reports to department and management along with assisting the Manager, Market Design in reviewing policy files related to markets, transmission and overall operations. You will also participate in Market Design initiatives and contribute to Market Design evolution work enabling the transformation of the province\xe2\x80\x99s electricity sector.

You have:

  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in business or economics, strong preference to Economic focus, or a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with equivalent experience.

  • Strong analytical acumen and an aptitude for conveying complex information into a simple, relevant and meaningful manner to different audiences.

  • Exceptional writing and documentation capabilities and experience with publishing external documents is an asset.

  • Strong quantitative aptitude and demonstrated analytical ability

  • Experience modeling electricity markets an asset

  • One or more years of experience in the electricity, energy, or related industry research.
