Discover how you can make a difference in the lives of individuals, families and communities around the world.:About the roleReporting to the AVP, Accounting and Controls, Canadian Finance, this role is accountable for leading a team of 4 finance professionals and the reporting function within Canadian Finance. Accountabilities of the role include leading the quarterly consolidated financial reporting effort for SLF Canada. This role supports senior management decision making and is responsible for all aspects of consolidated internal and external financial reporting and analysis, earnings and forecasting, controls over and coordination of the ledger close process for Canada. This role will also work closely with the Business Units and in close partnership with the Canadian Actuarial and ALM functions.What youll be doingThe individual in this role is a key contact for all consolidated financial reporting and must have the ability to collaborate effectively across SLF Canada and with the SLF Corporate Office. The incumbent will serve as a key point of contact for the external auditors and be instrumental in managing this relationship. A proven team leader and practical problem solver with the ability to identify and implement innovative solutions with a focus on process enhancements. The incumbent will be a key contributor towards building successful relationships across all SLF Canada functional areas.

  • Responsible for all aspects of consolidated financial reporting and analysis, earnings and forecasting
  • Leading the quarterly consolidated financial reporting effort for SLF Canada, including coordinating ledger close process
  • Directly support quarterly attestation of AVP, VP/Controller and Canada CFO that all financial information is complete, accurate and has sufficient and appropriate controls and governance
  • Accountable for the governance of accounting and ledger controls including execution of monitoring controls and maintaining a robust and effective control environment
  • Effectively partners with SLF Canada functional areas across Canada to support successful implementation of strategic initiatives, process improvements and enhancements
  • Demonstrating a consistent focus on building and retaining top talent by creating an exciting, engaged and supportive environment for employees to realize potential
What youll need to succeed:
  • 7 to 10 years of progressively increasing experience in a large and preferably public institution subject to OSFI regulation related to reporting, annual audits, regulatory compliance, Internal controls, and implementation of complex accounting guidance.
  • Degree in accounting, finance, or other similarly related field of study.
  • CPA or CA professional designation with large accounting firm experience preferred
  • Capable of quickly gaining a strong understanding of the operations and finances of the Canadian Business Group, its control environment and any key control risks
  • Strong accounting, analysis, and reporting skills and a deep understanding of IFRS and SOX controls relevant to the insurance industry
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills combined with good listening skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; success at cultivating strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and creating partnerships at all levels within the organization
  • Ability to coach and provide good development feedback
  • Unquestionable personal integrity, credibility and professionalism
  • Prior Life insurance accounting experience
  • Familiarity with Actuarial processes at a high level
  • Familiarity with financial software packages such as SAP and Hyperion

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.
