Job Title Director, Data Engineering
What is the opportunity?
The Director, Data Engineering is responsible for all platform and development work within GAM Data & Analytics. They provide direct leadership and engagement to multiple development teams focused on delivering big data solutions for business-critical applications, high-value business opportunities, and regulatory requirements. The role partners closely with GAM technology leaders, Business and Senior leaders from across GAM, and Enterprise partners from across RBC to define, prioritize, and implement GAM\xe2\x80\x99s data strategy, solution architecture, and implementation roadmap; along with providing execution leadership for aligned systems development. The role is pivotal to delivering on GAM\xe2\x80\x99s commitment to improving decision making, driven by data, and powered by technology; and the successful candidate will create new and innovative ways to leverage data across all of GAM\xe2\x80\x99s businesses through the development of new high-value capabilities and the continuous improvement of existing solutions and processes.
What will you do?
Build and lead a high-functioning, well-motivated engineering team and support them in the iterative development of high-quality solutions. Provide proactive, ongoing coaching to enable and empower team members and delivery squads.
Leverage your deep experience in building and maintaining highly scalable, reliable, and resilient systems to evolve and mature our data infrastructure and tech stack. Deliver ongoing and measurable improvements to data availability and accessibility, data quality, system and process resilience and reliability, automation, and data consumption across GAM\xe2\x80\x99s businesses.
Help steer the technical direction of our data engineering efforts and processes to enable best-in-class capabilities to meet increasing demands for trusted and timely data at scale, across GAM.
Identify, retain, and recruit top-shelf engineering and technical talent. Identify and champion development opportunities for team members to ensure continuous improvement of individual and team knowledge and expertise.
Partner closely with other technology leaders from across GAM and RBC to leverage existing and emerging enterprise capabilities, identify joint challenges and work collaboratively to overcome, and jointly identify and deliver new data-related capabilities that address common needs.
What do you need to succeed?
Must Have
Exceptional technology skills and expertise, with a focus on current and emerging big-data technologies and architectures (large-scale distributed computing, containerization, real-time and event-based processing, SQL, NoSQL, and graph databases, cloud-enabled and cloud-native systems development).
10+ years of hands-on experience building and deploying large-scale data platforms, pipelines, and workloads using DevOps and SRE best practices (HADOOP, Spark, Kafka, Java, Scala, Python, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, Azure / AWS, Snowflake, etc.)
A proven track-record of building and leading high-performing technology teams by example. Ability to lead, mange and inspire teams both locally and remotely; across regions and time-zones, and within a hybrid work environment.
Demonstrated success in applying agile best-practices to frame problems and prioritize key outcomes; hypothesize, iterate, and continuously improve on solutions; and continuously deliver incremental value to end-users and key stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to provide creative solutions to complex problems; and to translate those solutions into detailed roadmaps and workplans that can be effectively implemented by development teams/squads.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate highly technical concepts and solutions into concise written and verbal explanations that are easily understood by both technical and non-technical audiences.
A result-oriented mindset, with the discipline to build operationally hardened systems, the courage to drive innovation across new capabilities and technologies, and the resilience and perseverance to \xe2\x80\x98fail forward\xe2\x80\x99 towards success.
