The Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) group, part of the Information Technology Services (ITS) division, is responsible for campus core network, campus wireless, wide area network connectivity and internet connectivity for the University, including connectivity to research and education networks.

EIS is also responsible for services related to departmental network management, network, server and storage infrastructure, Windows and Linux server management services, database and application integration and support, enterprise backup service, 24/7 operation of central administrative data centres and telecommunications services.

Your opportunity:

Under the direction of the Manager, Data Centres, the incumbent is a physical infrastructure specialist that ensures the smooth operation of the EIS Data Centres by taking responsibility for the physical management of IT resources. The incumbent plans for, coordinates, receives, prepares and installs new equipment or prepares old equipment for removal in the University's central administrative data centre. Provides general support to EIS hardware infrastructure group team members. Responsible for receiving and resolving customer calls, emails and web tickets keeping a daily activity log of all events within the data centre. Performs regular system maintenance in accordance with documented processes and procedures. May also provide network diagnostics and problem resolution. Provides the first level of troubleshooting and corrective action for reported problems; tracks and documents all reported problems and service requests. Executes a physical inventory of IT assets, labelling of hardware, cables (network, power), preparation of inventory lists, reports, and inventory diagrams. Performs daily visual inspection of DC, mechanical room, generator, chillers (takes manual non-contact temperature readings) and ensures that all data loggers, and monitoring points are working properly. May be called upon to assist with central printing during annual periods of high print volumes or to cover absences. Maintains an understanding of the purpose of each component as well as normal operating parameters and maximum capacity of each. Keeps all hand tools and maintenance equipment clean, organized and operational. Notes anything that needs to be addressed. Maintains equipment in good working order, investigates and diagnoses malfunctions; effects corrective maintenance or initiates escalation. Acquires understanding of other operational areas and lends assistance in those areas.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Analyzing, recommending and designing internal network solutions to meet client needs
  • Analyzing and installing networking equipment
  • Devising solutions to operational problems within the capacity and operational limitations of installed equipment
  • Removing tripping hazards
  • Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years.
  • Linux or Unix Experience Required
  • Experience in troubleshooting cable plant issues with Cat6, 6, Fibre Optic, etc. using test equipment required
  • Cisco Catalyst and Nexus switching platform experience strongly perferred
  • Demonstrated high-quality service skills
  • Strong initiative and the ability to work independently
  • Strong analytical skills, problem solving skills
  • Experience and skill with manipulating delicate mechanical and electronic equipment with precision
  • Must have excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
Assets (Nonessential):
  • Expert knowledge of network and datacentre architectures, network management techniques, networking equipment and infrastructures (routers, switches, optical transport equipment, etc.)
  • A thorough understanding of IP protocols and network service application protocols such as DNS, DHCP, etc.
  • In-depth understanding of Data Centre security, network configuration and equipment monitoring protocols and technologies
