We recognize the land and waters that have inspired our work and offer gratitude to those Indigenous peoples on whose territory we work, live and play.About the role:Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular Part-Time Cord Blood Collection Specialist (Phlebotomist) to join our dynamic Stem Cells team.The Stem Cells team operates several programs that support better outcomes for patients living with the many diseases and disorders that can be treated with stem cell transplants such as leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, and inherited immune and metabolic disorders.Formula for success:
  • Using your amazing communication and interpersonal skills, you will work collaboratively with Cord Blood Bank (CBB) staff to ensure promotion, development and maintenance of an environment of continuous quality improvement in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards; you will also be responsible for promoting and facilitating effective stakeholder relationships both for internal and external customers
  • Utilizing your knowledge and experience with phlebotomy, you will be responsible for umbilical ex-utero cord blood collections at a specified hospital location
  • Applying your commitment to quality and excellence, you will promote a working environment that fosters professional growth, communication and positive working relationships which include presentations in community and within hospital to physicians, midwives, nurses, support staff and community stakeholders
  • Drawing on your incredible attention to detail and organizational skills, you will maintain operations of the cord blood bank collection location at the hospital including equipment and inventory coordination
  • Employing your fantastic leadership skills, you will provide training, support and mentorship to the cord blood bank team and hospital customers
Desired education and skills:
  • Post-secondary level education in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution preferably in science/health related field of study.
  • A minimum of three years of progressive experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
  • Experience with current Good Manufacturing Practices is an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Bilingualism is an asset.
  • Must be able to work independently, identify issues and provide resolutions to problems at the hospital.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, team building and ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team setting as a non-hospital employee in a hospital setting.
  • Computer literacy required; proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Must be detail-oriented and capable of working in a highly regulated environment. Ability to work under pressure to meet demands of the job.
  • Venepuncture experience is mandatory.
  • Experience in cord blood collection is an asset.

What you can expect:
  • There is a requirement to carry a cellular phone or pager for notification purposes while at the hospital.
  • Work schedule is on a rotational basis; Monday to Friday including holidays. Hours of operation are days and evenings, 8 hour shifts. Schedule may require taking a call shift on a rotating basis wherein the Collection Specialist can be called back after the regular shift.
