Job Description


Teatro Group is recruiting for the role of Controller. The Controller at Teatro Group will have the exciting opportunity to oversee the finance department for a group of 7 food and beverage concepts in Calgary, Alberta. The controller directs the accounting and control functions of the restaurant group while ensuring timely reporting of operating results. The Controller will play a critical role in developing and implementing the financial strategy of the group and each of the locations.

Controller Key Roles:
  • Directs financial operations for the Teatro group and each of the restaurant locations.
  • Directs or prepares the monthly trial balance and resulting financial statements, including income statement, balance sheet and statement of cash flows.
  • Prepares monthly and quarterly financial statements and presents them to the executive and ownership team.
  • Manage Cashflow and Cash Requirements and the oversight of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
  • Analyze and interpret financial results in order to assist and advise the executive team.
  • Advise the executive team on existing and potential operating/financial issues.
  • Liaise with management staff and advise them on cost management, cost control measures and the cost-effectiveness of their program areas.
  • Assist with training all management staff to read and understand all fiscal documents and management tools to better manage their location's costs.
  • Maintain year-end working papers and spreadsheets and assist with preparation for any audits or independent reviews.
  • Capital project accounting/cost monitoring; provide financial reports in support of decision making.
  • Perform regular audits at store levels of any inventory processes and cash handling processes ad documents.
  • Contribute to the preparation of strategic plans.
  • Development of budgets and forecasts for each location.
  • Ensure all legal and tax documentation is properly maintained and secured and that all statuary and fiscal reporting requirements are satisfied, which includes any government requirements.
  • Assist in maintaining policy and procedure documentation for complex financial and accounting issues.
  • Oversee an internal system of handling funds.
  • Complete monthly reconciliations on all accounts (bank and brokerage accounts).
  • Exert care and control over assets and records; establish procedures for safeguarding, including security and computer backup.

Skills & Education
  • Post-secondary degree in accounting, finance or related field required
  • A CPA designation is an asset but not required
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior accounting or financial management, providing full cycle accounting and preparation of financial statements
  • 2 years of experience with managing staff or a team
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Good understanding of accounting systems
  • High level of proficiency using Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Effective communicator
  • Proven leadership, problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize competing deadlines
