The City of Wetaskiwin is seeking an individual that displays mature and sound judgement with excellent customer service skills that wants to positively contribute to our local community. The successful candidate must be able to work a 40/hour week including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Reporting to the Senior Peace officer, the Community Peace Officer l provides enforcement of Municipal Bylaws and selected Provincial Statutes in accordance with the policies set out by the Council and the authorities appointed by the Province of Alberta. The Community Peace Officer, through observation and the receipt of complaints, enforces municipal bylaws and selected provincial statutes within the community. as well as observe traffic, conduct traffic stops, issue warnings, violation tags, or provincial tickets as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Assists the Reporting Supervisor develop public awareness programs and maintain positive public relations.
  • Conducts investigations into complaints and incidents involving violations of Municipal Bylaws and selected Provincial Statutes.
  • Required to operate the Automated Traffic Enforcement Equipment.
  • Collects evidence relating to investigations into complaints and incidents involving violations of Municipal Bylaws and selected Provincial Statutes.
  • Prepares Prosecutor Information Sheets and Court Briefs concerning a charge or ticket.
  • Completes any required reports relating to on duty activities (Use of Force, Occurrence, etc.)
  • Responds to complaints from the public regarding Municipal Bylaws and Provincial Statutes.
  • Maintains liaison with other local enforcement agencies.
  • Conducts public education seminars.
  • Conducts traffic control for emergency situations, parades, funeral processions, and other activities as required or requested.
  • Maintains a high level of dress and deportment to provide a positive image as a member of the Protective Services Program.
  • Participates in a patrol vehicle Daily Inspection Program and undertakes all vehicles preventative maintenance associated with this program.
  • Operates a computer to investigate complaint history and conduct routine clerical assignments.
  • Conducts other related duties as required.
  • Works various shifts and weekends as scheduled by supervisor.
Independent of Action/Decision Making
  • Works under minimal supervision while on patrol.
  • Reports to the Reporting Supervisor on a daily basis.
  • Deals with the public in confrontational situations and must use own sound judgment to resolve them.
  • Required to make instant decisions based on knowledge of laws and regulations.
Requirements:

Education and Work Experience
  • High School Diploma, Law Enforcement Diploma, or accredited police training
  • Other equivalencies will be considered (Peace or Police Officer experience)
  • Eligible for appointment as a Community Peace Officer Level One
  • CPR and First Aid qualified
  • Radar/Lidar training an asset
  • Weights and dimensions an asset
  • Commercial Vehicle Training an asset
  • Court experience an asset
  • ROADS experience an asset
  • REPORT EXEC experience an asset
  • Previous Automated Traffic Enforcement experience an asset
  • Minimum 3 years of enforcement experience.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written manner
  • Ability to de-escalate difficult situations
  • Ability to make instant decisions, based on knowledge of laws and regulations.
