Job Description




SAIT\xe2\x80\x99s Safety and Community Services department is responsible for the development, support and improvement of safety and security programs at SAIT. Comprised of Health, Safety and Environment and Campus Security and Emergency Services, SCS team members are focused on supporting the goal of a safe and secure campus environment for everyone in the SAIT community.


The Opportunity



The successful applicants must be eligible for a Community Level One Peace Officer appointment from the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Public Security Peace Officer Program, and complete selection and training requirements. Please note that this position requires shift work, including weekends and holidays. Peace Officers have the opportunity to access to a variety of educational and personal development programs including recreational and fitness facilities.



Note: This position will work 8 hours shifts Monday to Friday.

The Role

    • Reporting to the Security Operations Coordinator, the Peace Officer performs proactive foot, vehicle and bike patrols of the SAIT campus, including on-campus residences and off-site campuses, to enhance safety/security and develop positive contacts in a uniquely diverse community
    • Responds to incidents of emergency, criminal/provincial/SAIT offences, institutional policy and procedure violations, general complaints, calls for service and crime prevention. Examples include medical emergencies, crisis intervention, fire alarms, missing persons, disturbances, intoxicated persons, suspicious persons, trespassing, break and enter, theft, mischief, escorts, emergency notifications, special event security, property control, security surveys, building/room access, etc.
    • Exercises discretionary enforcement authority under numerous Provincial statutes and institutional policy; serves legal documents
    • Assist community members through various supports such as, education, referrals to social services, mental health supports, community assistance and/or discretionary enforcement in response to criminal activity and disorder
    • Conducts general complaint investigation; gathers and secures evidence, compiles reports
    • Administers/coordinates/contributes to departmental, community oriented and crime prevention programs such as presentations to students, faculty and staff on crime prevention and awareness
    • Liaises with other law enforcement and first responder agencies,
    • Investigates and prepares preliminary investigation reports, may assist department and faculties with non-academic investigations
    • Collaborates with and provides support, direction and mentorship to the Campus Security team
    • Provides testimony in a court of law and Institutional hearings.
    • Processes found and evidentiary property
    • Provides dispatch, administrative and support duties as assigned




Qualifications & Experience

    • Minimum High School Diploma by Alberta Education standards (or equivalent); diploma/degree program in Law Enforcement/Security or related field preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
    • Preference will be given to individuals who have successfully completed a diploma/degree program in Law Enforcement or related studies
    • Law enforcement/Security work experience or work in a related field is an asset
    • Ability to work a variety of shifts including days, overnight, weekends, and statutory holidays
    • Possess a current Standard First Aid Certification and Level C CPR with AED
    • Valid driver\'s license (Alberta Class 5 or equivalent, non-GDL)
    • Experience with Microsoft Suite
    • Preference may be given to those with previous and relevant Police or Peace Officer experience. The ideal candidate will have completed the Community Peace Officer Induction Program (CPOIP) or have an exemption

Provide certified copies of High School and/or Post-Secondary transcripts upon request A recent clear driver\'s abstract demonstrating a good driving record with no more than four demerits; Out of Province drivers must provide a three-year abstract from the licensing authority The successful candidate will be required to complete Criminal Vulnerable Sector Search that includes fingerprint submission; a criminal pardon, if applicable PARE (Physical Abilities Required Examination) testing with a time of 4:45 minutes or under, acquired within the past six (6) months
