Contract: 10-20 hours per month freelance / contract

Location: Calgary or Edmonton

Compensation: $30-35 per hour

ROLE

The Empower Me program is looking for a natural storyteller who can uncover, write and share stories that illustrate the impact of our work. Reporting to the Vice President, this freelance contract role will work in our Empower Me division to help us share our stories and deliver clear communications about our award-winning program.

Our ideal candidate will act as a roving reporter attending our workshops and events and following up on story leads from the Empower Me team. You will shape stories into compelling copy that can be shared with various stakeholders.

To be successful in this role, you must be motivated and able to work autonomously. You are an exceptionally strong communicator who is skilled at relating to diverse groups of people.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Uncovering program stories through attending workshops and events and in-person interviews.
  • Copywriting stories and tailoring them for specific audiences.
  • Supplementary communications support for program delivery, including gathering and writing newsletter and report content, occasional key message development and other miscellaneous communications support.
  • Training and supporting our program mentors to help them uncover story leads.
  • Monitor local media activity related to the program and energy efficiency.
  • Sharing stories with media through communication initiatives; including preparing news releases, proactively pitching stories, developing key messages, developing media lists.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A natural storyteller who can make the people around them feel at ease.
  • Strong writer who can write quickly and concisely in plain English.
  • An excellent communicator who is skilled working with diverse audiences online and face to face.
  • Flexible schedule with the ability to work remote most of the time but also travel within the Vancouver lower mainland as required for events.
  • 5+ years of experience in journalism, reporting, PR or communications.
  • Must have own technology. Experience using MS Word and the ability to quickly learn how to use a variety of software is required.
  • Experience in public relations and the ability to take stories and gain media placement would be an asset.
  • Photography and videography skills and experience would be an asset.
