Communications Manager Permanent, Full-Time, starting June 2023 Located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, St. Michaels University School (SMUS) is a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 day and boarding school with a global reputation for academic excellence. The Position: Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Communications Manager requires a seasoned communications professional with a strong digital copywriting/writing background. The primary purpose of the role is to provide communications support for St. Michaels University School (SMUS) and meet the needs of internal and external community members and stakeholders. The Communications Manager will help oversee and create clear and concise communications for SMUS?s digital and print content marketing strategy while working as part of a strategic Marketing and Communications team. This role will also implement effective and creative communications programs and bring SMUS?s Vision and Mission to life. In support of a wide variety of departments and SMUS initiatives, this roles? duties will include writing, editing, proofreading, writing ad copy, writing print and digital marketing content, writing and editing blogs/stories, photography, and working with various departments to ensure all communications are aligned with strategic priorities and goals. This role will also include managing freelance writers, and project management, including oversight of highly collaborative team members, for 12 core Marketing and Communications projects. To support occasional departmental requirements for events and meetings outside of normal business hours, flexibility regarding hours of work will be required. The successful candidate will have the following skills, background and interest:

  • Post-secondary education in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or a related field, along with a minimum of 3-5 years experience in communications or marketing; minimum 3 years of managerial experience.
  • Outstanding writing, storytelling, proofreading and editing skills.
  • Well-developed project management skills with the proven ability to manage multiple projects at once while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Able to interpret information and conduct research, if needed.
  • Ability to create, analyze and edit a wide variety of print and digital publications.
  • Exceptional communication, public speaking/presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in the Adobe suite of programs, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), and MailChimp; and
  • Knowledge and experience with photography on Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras.
  • High level of attention to detail and a strong understanding of the importance of adherence to brand voice, tone and style.
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, and a self-starter with the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to be tactful, demonstrate excellent judgment, work as a positive and collaborative team member, and be a team player.
Responsibilities include:
  • Manage media relations for the School.
  • Project management of core department print/digital projects to ensure all deliverables are delivered within time and scope.
  • Help manage the Communications team, assigning tasks as required, while remaining a collaborative team player.
  • Manage the design, content and production of print and digital publications involving multiple stakeholder departments.
  • Create and edit stories, press releases, internal announcements and copy for websites, blog posts, social media platforms, emails/newsletters, and print and digital ad campaigns.
  • Edit/proof SMUS?s communication or marketing material.
  • Write and edit Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising, Paid Social, email, landing page, Search Engine Optimization(SEO) and other digital marketing copy.
  • Liaise with other departments within the school to determine communications needs and fulfil those requests in a timely manner.
  • Monitor analytics, and create reports detailing the successes, and failures, of communications campaigns and strategies.
  • Create weekly content (developing story ideas, conducting interviews, writing articles) that appeals to SMUS?s diverse audiences and markets.
  • Plan, gather material for, write, and send e-newsletters to the school community.
  • Lead, develop and execute a Content Marketing Strategy that aligns with SMUS?s strategic plan and SEO strategy, and the goals of the Marketing and Communications, Advancement and Admissions departments.
  • Lead cross-departmental content planning and editorial meetings;
  • Take and edit photos and videos for school events (periodic evening and weekend work), and manage digital assets.
  • Support the creation of social media content including videos, photos and more.
  • Build relationships with students, faculty, administrators and alumni; and
  • Stay up to date on industry trends, and make recommendations for adjustments to communications strategies and practices.
