The Communication & Design Coordinator is a great opportunity for an individual who is keen and motivated to contribute to various aspects of communications and information design and production within a research environment. The role provides:

  • Leadership in knowledge translation, including the translation of research and scientific concepts to communicate complex ideas and processes visually through social media and web, and the dissemination of curated content related to mens health on web and social media.
  • Technological leadership in mens health intervention development, including but not limited to building and maintaining website, and producing and editing podcast.
  • Graphic design services to brand specific outputs drawn from and promote events hosted by the Mens Health Research Program.
Organizational Status
This position reports directly to the Research Manager (Dr. Nina Gao), with some guidance from Dr. John Oliffe, Professor, and Founder and Lead of the UBC Mens Health Research ProgramWork PerformedResearch Duties
  • Develops knowledge translation strategies based on research produced by the research program (i.e., articles, blogs, social media content)
  • Leads the technological component of mens health intervention development, including building and maintain website, creating and editing podcast episodes?
Social Media Management
  • Creates and implements marketing, event promotion and social media strategies and campaigns, including content ideation and design, and implementation schedules for the Mens Health Research Programs social media platforms (i.e., Twitter, Youtube, LinkedIn)
  • Grows the programs social media influence into new social media platforms while increasing the presence on existing platforms including Twitter, Youtube and LinkedIn
  • Reports interaction data bi-annually in recommending adjustments
Website Management
  • Manages Mens Health Research Programs website and two intervention websites (Men Building Intimate Partner Relationships,
; InGoodCompany, ), including graphic design, updates and maintenance * Reports web analytics bi-annually in recommending adjustmentsConsequence of Error/Judgement
Accuracy is essential since errors may have implications for future policy and funding. The candidate is required to interact with faculty, researchers, and staff at the Mens Health Research Program, and will have contact with government, regional health authority staff and other community and professional groups.Supervision Received
Receives training and supervision, and works collaboratively with the MHR team toward project deadlines. Work is directed by Dr. Nina Gao and reviewed by Dr. John Oliffe for accuracy and adherence to procedures. Works within established project parameters. Might supervise UBC Work Learn student.Supervision Given
NoneMinimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with ones own- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing ones own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusionPreferred Qualifications
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms (YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.) and their respective audiences and how they can be deployed
  • Computer experience and training required include Adobe Creative and Production Suites (including Acrobat, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and After Effects), Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Working knowledge of design software, including report layout, vector illustration, publishing and print management. Familiarity with basic design principles.
  • Effective oral and written communication, prioritizing, multi-tasking, interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability of assimilating, analyzing and presenting information to a variety of audiences
  • Proven active interest in and knowledge of infographics and data visualization
  • Ability to be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team and to work effectively to meet deadlines
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy, tact and discretion when working with confidential and/or sensitive information and in deadline with various levels of administration and external agencies.
  • Experience with content management system required and experience with HTML, CSS, and spatial data considered is an asset
  • Education/training in research or demonstrated experience working in a research environment is preferred
  • An interest in mens health, population and public health communications and experience working collaboratively with community-based organizations and health researchers is desirable
  • Proven experience with podcast production is an asset
