Compensation Range $5,468.83 - $7,878.17 CAD Monthly

In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary
The Division of Plastic Surgery\xe2\x80\x99s Clinical Research Manager leads the planning and execution of the Division\xe2\x80\x99s research activities at BC Children\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital (BCCH). The incumbent will oversee and execute all tasks of research studies including: design, ethics applications, participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis, as well as the drafting and editing of grant applications and journal article submissions, and the supervision of students, residents, and junior researchers.

Organizational Status

The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health. The Department consists of more than 600 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff in nine divisions distributed across British Columbia. Specialty training programs are offered in Cardiac Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Department is also home to the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC).

The incumbent reports to the Research Supervisor, Dr. Erika Henkelman and will take direction from the principal investigators / plastic surgeons in the Division of Plastic Surgery at BCCH. This position involves collaboration with plastic surgeons, allied health professionals and clerical staff, UBC faculty and staff, medical trainees, and medical students.

Work Performed

Lead the development of research projects by defining strategy, goals, and study scope.

Manage, plan and update research projects including timelines, protocols and budgets, strategies for data gathering, analysis, and reporting.

Conduct literature reviews and summaries relevant to project topics.

Develop and prepare ethics applications and submissions.

Oversee the recruitment of study participants and coordinate study visits.

Manage communications with participants (parents/children) to facilitate ongoing research activities; communicate with staff and clinicians on site and at collaborating sites to ensure adherence to research protocols.

Communicate project activities to participating agencies and the public when required, provide information and explain project objectives. Prepare funding partner and stakeholder communications.

Develop and maintain relationships to ensure participant compliance throughout the life cycle of the research project.

Oversee research surveys and collect, synthesize, and interpret survey or research data.

Manage the preparation of grant applications and scientific communications.

Lead research meetings.

Create and coordinate invoices and expense claims for research projects

Onboard, train, supervise, educate, and support students in the design, ethics, data collection, data analysis, presentation, and manuscript preparation of research projects.

Oversee the writing and editing of articles for publications as well as national and international conference presentations.

Develop, maintain and edit research reports, presentations and articles for publication, copy-proof reports.

Coordinate the hiring, training and onboarding of junior staff, students, and volunteers.

Contribute to a respectful, inclusive working environment.

Perform other responsibilities, as required.

Working Conditions

This position is based at BC Children\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital, Division of Plastic Surgery in a shared office environment.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Any procedures or data recorded as part of the studies must be accurate and must accurately reflect the work performed. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered to. All activities involving participants are accountable to the Principal Investigators, the Department Head, and the candidate\xe2\x80\x99s governing organization. The incumbent is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner, suited to the proper activities of the University of British Columbia. Any procedures or data recorded as part of the studies must be accurate and must accurately reflect the work performed. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered to.

Inappropriate disclosure of subjects\' personal information would contravene privacy legislation and could result in legal action. Errors in data, reference materials or publications, if detected, would result in delays and requirements for additional resources to obtain or validate data. The Clinical Research Manager is expected to work in a professional manner following ICH GCP guidelines, exercising poise and discretion especially when dealing with vulnerable patients and their families, and with sensitive medical information.

Supervision Received

The incumbent reports to the Research Supervisor, Dr. Erika Henkelman. This position works independently, and has considerable latitude. The incumbent is expected to exercise sound judgment and take appropriate initiative.

The incumbent will provide training, onboarding, and supervision to students and junior staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of research design, implementation, and outcome assessment.

Experience in both quantitative and qualitative clinical research.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Ability to exercise judgement, tact, discretion, and diplomacy

Excellent computer literacy (documents, presentations, spreadsheets, databases, statistics, analytics)

Interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work in a team environment and independently.

Ability to contribute to a respectful, cooperative and supportive work environment.

Sound judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality, tact, and discretion.

Excellent organizational skills, particularly in the area of prioritizing work, multi-tasking.

Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to accommodate a flexible schedule, occasionally including additional hours in evenings and early mornings, as required.
