This is what you'll be doing:

Working under the general direction of the Lab Manager and collaboratively with the Lab Management Team to plan, organize and direct the day to day operational activities of the Milton laboratory.

Responsibilities:

The Charge Technologist of Milton Core Laboratory understands the principles of medical laboratory sciences basing practice on current techniques and scientific knowledge. The Charge. Technologist ensures the accurate, precise and verifiable performance of tests and the timely reporting of results which will provide reliable information for the diagnosis/monitoring of each patient/client. The Charge Technologist systematically evaluates and analyses information to facilitate continuous improvement of the laboratory process in the interest of patient care.

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Milton Core Laboratory and the direct technical supervision of the staff (Medical Laboratory Technologists and Laboratory Assistants) working in that area. The Charge Technologist will oversee all departmental areas including; Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine and Point of Care Testing, and assist in overseeing and supporting the Lab Assistants. The Charge Technologist will assist in facilitating activities related to Pathology and Microbiology emanating at the Milton site with the respective Team Lead at the OTMH site
  • Participation in bench work (as required)
  • Provides strong technical support, consultation and interpretation in all aspects of departmental testing.
  • Coordinates troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Responsible for inventory control and management of supplies.
  • Orders direct supplies and organizes standing orders, contracts and service agreements.
  • Assist and advise the Lab Manager on reagents, consumables and service contracts.
  • Assists in the recruitment of new staff and participates in the performance evaluation of staff.
  • Responsible for scheduling and payroll for all staff
  • Responsible for pulling and reviewing statistical reports (i.e. turnaround statistics, workload statistics etc.), identifying trends and providing recommendations for improvement
  • Responsible for following up on clinical area concerns in a timely manner
  • Responsible for ensuring timely documentation and follow-up of non-conformities.
  • Maintains current knowledge of professional standards, legislation, accreditation requirements, established health and safety guidelines, and ensures compliance of staff.
  • Monitors procedures, develops, updates and reviews technical manuals to ensure consistency across all three hospital laboratories.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance to the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare requirements and maintenance of the quality management system. Responsible for quality assurance, quality control and risk management programs.
  • Development of quality indicators and preparation of statistics as they relate to the Milton site.
  • Participates in the evaluation and implementation of new equipment and methodologies.
  • Recommends and assists in the planning and execution of educational opportunities for staff.
  • Participates in the teaching and training of new staff and students of medical laboratory programs.
  • Demonstrates being a Team player, strong communicator, caring and respectful amongst internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility, working within the financial boundaries of the organizational funding.
  • Supports management in the development of operational and corporate budgets and provide statistics and analyses related to department as required.
  • Collaborates and supports the Georgetown Charge Technologist (when required)
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager
Qualifications:
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario
  • Minimum 6 years of relevant technical core lab experience required (including Transfusion Medicine and Point of Care Testing)
  • Experience with Instrument Manager middleware an asset
  • Experience with various Point of Care platforms preferred
  • Previous supervisory experience required
  • Recent experience with scheduling required
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Must be capable of functioning well in a high stress environment
  • Demonstrated excellence in laboratory Quality Control theory, practice and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IQMH Quality Systems and Quality Assurance procedures
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to prioritize work, adapt to changing priorities and to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and customer service skills, within and external to the laboratory setting
  • Teaching/training experience an asset
  • Must be able to work independently or in a team setting; demonstrated self-direction
  • Proven ability to motivate staff, promote teamwork
  • Experience with the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of educational materials to facilitate transfusion related learning for of hospital staff
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
  • Must be capable of adapting to changing priorities, deadlines and procedures.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
  • Continuing education relevant to area of responsibilities as outlined
  • Strong time management and project management skills
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Must be physically able to do the job
  • Demonstrated satisfactory employment and attendance record
