Position Summary

There is a Charge Technologist for Chem/Hem and a Charge Technologist for Transfusion Medicine. Together they will supervise and execute the overall technical operations and specified administrative duties of Core Laboratory Services at the Quinte Healthcare Corporation-Belleville including inter-site responsibilities as assigned in collaboration with the Charge Technologist, Point of Care and Charge Technologist, Quality/LIS.

Each charge technologist will oversee specific requirements related to their disciplines. Emergency callback and standby as required.

Required

- Graduate of a Medical Laboratory Technology accredited program
- Member in good standing of the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario
- Five or more years of discipline and related broad laboratory experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
- Supervisory, verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Electronic aptitude.

Duties

1. The Charge Technologists, Core Lab will be responsible for overseeing:
a) General supervision of core lab staff
b) ESP schedule changes
c) Green dotting shifts (or delegate)
d) Workload units (discipline specific)
e) Core Lab MLT benches
f) Core Lab MLA benches (in conjunction with Charge Technologist, POC)
g) Referred Out testing (in conjunction with Charge Technologist, LIS/QA)

2. The Charge Technologists, Core Lab will coordinate and support the department and the broader laboratory team in development and delivery of the quality assurance and improvement programs, discipline specific, by:
a) Following up on QHC Cares events and any complaints
b) Preparing for various inspections ie. Accrediting bodies, MOL, etc
c) Ensuring timely review of the quality control results for precision, accuracy, trends and shifts
d) Reviewing patient results and log sheets for technical and/or clerical accuracy
e) Reviewing corrective action documentation and making recommendations for improvements to Laboratory Services Advisory Committee
f) Initiating actions for non-compliance
g) Acting as a resource for queries and troubleshooting
h) Supporting regulatory requirements and ensuring provision of timely and accurate reports.
i) Assists in non-technical related projects especially projects involving professional staff outside of the laboratory department. (examples include specimen collection improvement strategies, process improvements, send outs issues and covering the receiving benches,)

3. The Charge Technologists, Core Lab will assist in developing a corporate wide laboratory program, discipline specific, in conjunction with POC and QA/LIS Charge Technologists where appropriate
a. Coordinating the team to complete initial and final evaluations of all instrumentation selected for core lab testing.
b. Designing, coordinating and continuously monitoring programs for instrument maintenance, quality control and quality assurance.
c. Coordinate and assist the team in creating, writing and distribution of up-to-date procedures to the appropriate manufacturers and accrediting body requirements
d. Assist in providing/supporting training programs for the operators
e. Ensure appropriate proficiency testing is completed including discordant investigation and with all results documented
f. Ensure staff competency is completed and documented
g. Developing quality improvement initiatives (e.g. audits, indicators and outcome studies)
h. Attending the appropriate committee meetings
i. Ensure patient testing is consistent throughout the corporation by using standardized instrumentation, normal ranges and critical values.
j. Developing procedures which facilitate standardized recording and reporting of patient results at all sites
k. Ensure appropriate maintenance is completed
l. Responsible for quality, and risk management, improvements, monitoring and reports
m. Performs other duties as assigned
n. Models QHC Mission, Vision and Values.
o. Participates in annual goal development
p. Delegate in charge when absent where applicable

4. The Charge Technologists, Core Lab (discipline specific) will
a. Ensure all Core Lab manuals are reviewed/revised and updated as needed. (includes Specimen Procurement Manual, Laboratory Operating manual, Downtime manual and Purchasing manual) as well as discipline specific manuals, in the document management system.
b. Acts as a clinical resource advisor to the laboratory team and to the QHC professional/clinical teams on issues related to quality, efficiency, knowledge generation and other related issues for Core Lab.
c. Assists QHC management in the preparation of specific capital equipment submissions
d. Participates as the member at the Laboratory Service Advisory committee.
e. Participates in interviewing, training, and evaluating relevant laboratory staff.
f. Provides direction and support to ensure a safe work environment is maintained.
g. Prepares policies, procedures and reports to ensure that the relevant legislated requirements, and quality standards, are met.
h. Reports to the Laboratory Manager any unusual or inconsistent findings during performance of diagnostic testing.
i. Maintains and troubleshoots appropriate lab related middleware with IT or vendor assistance
j. Coordinates student placement hours, in conjunction with the QHC parent college site coordinator, within the department and ensures placement criteria are met.
k. Prepares procedures and reports to ensure that relevant legislated requirements, and quality standards, are met.
l. Provides direction and support to ensure a safe work environment is maintained
