Our client, an award winning technology start-up is looking to hire a Business Development Manager to join their growing team working at the cutting edge of biodiversity monitoring. The role will focus on working with key clients in North America. Our client operates in sectors including: Water, Marine and Energy, Extractives, Infrastructure, and Conservation. Experience in any of these industries and working on biodiversity assessment projects is essential. You will be part of a team of business developers, each responsible for different geographical regions and sectors and will report to the General Manager with a dotted line to the Business Development Director. You will also work closely with the rest of team across multiple departments, particularly the North America Business Development team. The role will ideally be based at our client's offices in Guelph, Ontario with the expectation for some hybrid at home opportunity, but this is not a prerequisite, and connections to the West coast of North America will be an asset. The role will involve occasional travel. This is a role that carries a high level of responsibility. You will be comfortable working autonomously where necessary, managing multiple priorities and ultimately thrive as part of an already highly successful team.
Familiarity with the tools our client uses (e.g. environmental DNA and metabarcoding) is helpful but not essential for this role since full training will be provided. Of greater importance is experience with one of more of the sectors of focus, preferably in the field of environmental management, ecology, biodiversity science/ conservation, or a project manager role.
Roles & responsibilities:
General
Establishing key partnerships and strong networks with companies identified as priority in the North American business development pipeline.
Develop business opportunities in North America, including running workshops for stakeholders and providing training on how DNA-based tools can be integrated into monitoring strategies.
Assist with customer account management for clients operating in the sector in different regions of the world, which includes consulting on survey design and ensuring timely delivery of projects by coordinating with the laboratory and operations teams.
Train clients in the collection of eDNA samples. This may occasionally include joining survey teams in the field in remote locations.
Work with our business development team, Products Team, and Research Scientists to advise clients.
Work with the operations team to ensure supply of sampling equipment to clients and to procure relevant permits to work and export samples where necessary.
Establish and maintain a working relationship with key partners and subcontractors.
Work with the wider business development team within the organization to develop opportunities with the largest clients operating internationally.
Communication
Maintain regular communications with the team, always complying with the organization's policies and procedures and upholding the organization's standards and the core elements of the brand.
Build strong relationships with partners, collaborators and clients in the sector.
Engage closely with the wider team to stay up to date with projects.
Work with the marketing team to assist with the production of online content and training materials.
Specialist knowledge, skills & experience:
Experience working with clients, consulting, project management and engagement in a relevant sector.
A background in ecology, biodiversity science, conservation, environmental management or similar.
Attention to detail, excellent communication and presentation skills.
It would also be an advantage to have:
Experience in negotiating commercial contracts.
An existing network of stakeholders in one or more target industries.
Experience working on environmental impact assessment projects.
An understanding of environmental DNA and metabarcoding would be advantageous but not essential.
Experience in science outreach activities and education.

Ability to cultivate strong and lasting relationships
