Job Description


Dalhousie Community Association (DCA) is seeking an experienced, business minded, solution driver with proven bookkeeping/accounting experience to fill the critical role of Bookkeeper, working 30 hours per week on site at our Community Centre in NW Calgary. The Dalhousie Community Association takes pride in offering a variety of programs and services with hopes to enhance the quality of life for the people who live and work in Dalhousie. The DCA conducts most of its operations at the Dalhousie Community Centre, located at 5432 Dalhart RD NW. The Dalhousie Community Centre is a vibrant and dynamic building that serves as a gathering place which promotes community involvement and engagement. With approximately 9,000 residents, Dalhousie is a community that is small by big city standards, but big in community spirit. In the position of Bookkeeper, reporting to the General Manager and working collaboratively with the entire operations team, you will be accountable for:

  • Conducting full-cycle accounting for all DCA operations, including, but not limited to, the Community Centre, Dalhousie Out of School Care (DOSC), and the preschool.
  • Performing invoicing, bank reconciliation, general ledger, and accounts payable/receivable duties.
  • Completing monthly reconciliations of balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Applying knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Statement of Financial Accounting Standards (SFAS).
  • Maintaining and balancing subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, and posting transactions, and reconciling entries.
  • Benefits registration, administration, and reporting for all eligible employees.
  • Updating the payroll system based on employee data; adding new employees, updating information as required, removing employees at the end of employment.
  • Adhere to all payroll procedures and processes and ensure compliance to all applicable employment standards and provincial and federal legislation.
  • Completing payroll runs as scheduled with complete accuracy.
  • Preparing accurate and timely month-end and year-end financial statements as well as various management reports on a monthly basis.
  • Preparing Federal, Provincial, and GST returns, along with other external returns as required.
  • Supporting the General Manager in preparing the annual operations budget.
  • Preparing all documentation and reports required for annual audit procedures.
  • Ad-hoc reports, tasks, and analyses as needed.
  • Maintaining all historical records in DCA filing system, both digital and hard copy.
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality of privileged information as per privacy laws and ethical standards.
  • Providing backup support and vacation coverage to other team members as required.
To be successful in this role, you must have:
  • Diploma or Degree in Finance or Accounting, or sufficient years of relevant experience.
  • 5+ Years of relevant accounting experience, preferably supporting operations; experience working with non-profits is an asset.
  • Excellent knowledge of Quick Books and demonstrated advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with PayWorks is an asset.
  • Proficient data entry skills and excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well under pressure with multiple concurrent deadlines and operate in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent analytical skills and strong problem solver.
  • High integrity and work ethic, highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of professional interaction with customers and guests, various levels of operations, and the board of directors.
  • Collaborative, self-starting, team player, with a willingness to \xe2\x80\x9croll up the sleeves" as necessary; respectful yet assertive.
Work Conditions:
  • Ability to sit and stand for varying amounts of time during working hours.
  • Work location is in office and working remotely will not be a regular occurrence.
