. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 8 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Human Performance Lab (HPL) is located in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. The areas of research within the lab vary from nutrition, muscular/skeletal functioning, High Performance sport training, injury recovery and prevention, as well as improving quality of life for those with debilitating diseases. As a research facility staff and clients may be exposed to bio and chemical hazards.
The Biomechanics Technician will be working under the day-to-day supervision of Dr. Bill Wannop. The successful applicant will focus on the research of athletic equipment and will be heavily involved in the orchestration of data collection sessions and analysis. Testing sessions may occur in the evenings and/or weekends. The Biomechanics Technician must be able to work independently or with other staff and students, conducting high performance sport related testing using protocols previously developed by Dr. Wannop. This role requires strong communication skills as there is a frequent interaction with clients, other staff, students, and interdepartmental teams. Use of professional judgment is required to effectively manage complex issues and minimize the potential for errors. It is important that the Biomechanics Technician has the initiative for professional development, ensuring their knowledge is current within the field. The Biomechanics Technician will also have the directive to suggest improvements to procedures as appropriate and train or educate students or other staff involved in the research project.
This is a fixed-term, part time position. The employment term is from January 1, 2026 to August 31, 2026.
Summary of Key Responsibilities
(job functions include but are not limited to):
Data Collection/Analysis
Organize testing sessions with coaches/athletes/participants to complete high-performance sport related testing
Lead data collection sessions that may consist of the use of the 3D Motion Analysis System, pressure measurement system, timing lights, mechanical testing machines, etc.
Keep all records of raw and processed data for reporting purposes
Research
Design systems related to athletic equipment and performance
Test prototypes to assess changes in behavior or performance
Report Writing and Presentation
Participate in the interpretation and synthesis of results into pertinent conclusions and recommendations based on the research study and/or client specifications
Assist in effectively presenting results and conclusions in writing and orally
Qualifications / Requirements:
Master's degree in Engineering or Kinesiology
Experience with all aspects of scientific research
High level of effective organizational, time and personal initiative skills, teamwork, accuracy and strong attention to detail
Strong skills with Microsoft Office; Matlab skills are an asset
Knowledge of motion capture and pressure measurement systems
Experience writing scientific manuscripts and technical reports
