The Olympic Oval is the premier Winter Olympic legacy facility from the 1988 Winter Olympic Games as part of the University of Calgary's Faculty of Kinesiology. The facility provides programs and services for a number of local, national, and international stakeholders and is home to high performance athletes, world-class high-performance programs, and excellent research. The Oval provides a dynamic environment for Faculty of Kinesiology programs including Dino Athletics, Active Living, and various Faculty courses and research initiatives. The Olympic Oval brings international recognition to the University of Calgary through the hosting of major international world class events, the training of Olympic athletes, and ongoing development of high-performance programs. Additionally, the Olympic Oval is recognized locally as a major part of the Calgary community, providing public skating, events and bookable spaces for various public user groups and entities.
The Skate Shop High Performance Speed Skating Technician reports to the Olympic Oval's Manager, Innovation, Competitions, and Sales. The incumbent must show initiative, discretion, excellent judgment as decisions made will directly impact athlete's performances. During peak competition season (October-March), volume of work increases substantially. The incumbent must be able to work under high stress as advice to athletes for their equipment will result directly on athlete's performances in a high-performance environment. Incumbent must be able to deal with an environment where there is ambiguity, continuous change and shifting priorities. A great portion of the work is dependent on events and event deadlines. This position will have moderate to high levels of stress. This is a regular full time limited term AUPE position with a variable work schedule, including evening and weekend hours and occasional overtime.
Summary of Key Responsibilities
(job functions include but are not limited to):
Leadership/Administration
Ensure the quality, services and knowledge offered through the Skate Shop are of world class caliber
Develops formal training programs for Skate Technicians, Skate Shop Attendants, and oversees training for all staff working in the skate shop
Maintain a standard level of service that is provided to all users to ensure a consistent service
Ongoing follow-up of designated tasks completed by Skate Shop Attendants and Technicians
Assists with projects as assigned by Manager
Fulfills Skate Shop Attendant duties when required
Equipment/ Skate Shop
Provide comprehensive training and leadership to all Tech Shop and Skate Shop staff skaters and coaches
Oversees the repair and preventative maintenance of the skate sharpening machines
Responsible to ensure all machinery is maintained and cleaned regularly
Responsible for the maintenance of the skate shop specific equipment including an in-depth understanding of the software requirements and data as it relates to blade rockering
Must be an innovator in the Tech Shop area
Provide excellent customer service
Maintain Shopify point of sale and online sales system, adding item descriptions, pictures, and updating inventory
Works with identified suppliers in re-ordering and restocking speed skating merchandise
Process and ship online merchandise orders
Program Servicing and Support
Provide specific advice and expertise regarding equipment such as blades and boots
Ensure timely service for preparing and maintaining equipment and new equipment
Establish a high standard of internal processes and practices in field of expertise
Maintain appropriate documentation/data bank regarding athlete's specifications and any technical and mechanical processes for which tech shop technicians are responsible
Establish and advise best practices protocol with skaters and coaches
Anticipating, troubleshooting and give expert advice on blade and equipment requirements
Qualifications / Requirements:
Post-secondary education is preferred
Must have experience operating specialized blade rockering machines
Must be able to problem solve, assess and determine blade and equipment malfunctions and functions to advise athletes and to optimize athlete performances
Must be extremely knowledgeable in the use and delivery of specialized skate sharpening and rockering equipment, software and techniques
Minimum 3 years experience working on speed skating blades and equipment
Extensive experience with skate sharpening machines is required
A strong background in customer services/relations is required
Excellent customer services experience and abilities
Excellent problem-solving abilities
Previous experience with merchandise sales
Minimum of one-year experience in a leadership role
Experience as a High-Performance athlete would be an asset
Knowledge of CSIS and Shopify would be an asset
The incumbent must be able to work under pressure, juggle multiple timelines, and work within a variety of environments and with a variety of people
