Position: Sport Instructor, Speed Skating
Department: High Performance
Position Type: Auxiliary (1 shift per week with opportunity to increase over time; expectation to commit to four 1.5-2 hour meetings throughout the season)
The Richmond Olympic Oval's High Performance Speed Skating program provides competitive athletes with technical, tactical, and physical development opportunities to excel at the provincial, national, and international levels. The Sport Instructor, Speed Skating (Short Track) role supports Neo Junior and Junior athletes in the High Performance Competitive Stream while offering emerging coaches valuable experience working alongside a knowledgeable coaching team. This position focuses on technical skill development, performance analysis, and fostering a positive and holistic team culture.
Key responsibilities:

  • Assist the Head Coach with delivery of on-ice speed skating programs, ensuring a safe and engaging environment for athletes.
  • Provide technical coaching to improve athletes' sport-specific skills, following Speed Skating Canada standards and curriculum.
  • Deliver constructive feedback to athletes, fostering a positive and inclusive team culture.
  • Lead on-ice sessions under the guidance of the Head Coach when required.
  • Support athlete engagement through progressive instruction, skill-building drills, and educational activities appropriate to age and skill level.
  • Provide first aid when necessary and enforce program safety rules.
  • Collaborate with OvalHP staff to analyze athlete performance and implement effective coaching methodologies.
Qualifications:
Desirable Coaching Qualities
  • Passionate about developing youth athletes along the high-performance pathway.
  • Demonstrates a growth mindset and commitment to personal improvement.
  • Belief in an athlete-centered approach to development and performance.
Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience coaching competitive stream athletes at the club level.
  • Strong knowledge of speed skating techniques and sport instruction.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Familiarity with Speed Skating Canada's standards and curriculum.
Licenses, Certificates, and Registrations
  • Successful completion of Grade 12.
  • NCCP Development Coach Certified (Level 1) or higher.
  • Fundamentals Coaching Certification required; Intro to Competition certification is an asset.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR-C/AED certificates.
  • Safe Sport, Respect in Sport, Rule of 2, and NCCP Make Ethical Decisions training.
Compensation range: $21.10 - $28.41 plus 12% in lieu of benefits (hourly rate is based on qualifications and experience)
