Job Summary
The successful candidate will join a vibrant academic and research environment, conducting interdisciplinary work that bridges conservation science, computational modeling, and art history. The fellow will focus on the development and implementation of AI-based methods to interpret spectral datasets (e.g., X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Fibre Optic Reflectance Spectroscopy (FORS), multispectral and hyperspectral imaging) for the rapid and accurate characterization of materials used by artists, including identifying their aging and degradation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop machine learning algorithms to analyze complex spectroscopic datasets.
Produce and characterize reference samples using a variety of imaging and spectroscopic techniques.
Advance microanalytical techniques, particularly hyperspectral microscopy.
Maintain and support laboratory instrumentation and protocols.
Contribute to the Art Conservation curriculum through workshops and lectures.
Engage in public outreach and deliver an annual public lecture on fellowship research.
Conduct independent and collaborative research resulting in peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
Develop and deliver workshops and training sessions within the Art Conservation program.
Design and implement operating procedures for spectroscopic scientific instruments housed in the Art Conservation program.
Coordinate research activities and liaise with external partners and initiatives.
Manage administrative tasks related to research reporting and compliance.
Participate in outreach and knowledge mobilization through public events and lectures.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A completed Master's degree (MAC, MA, MSc, or PhD) in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Heritage Conservation, or a related field from a recognized program in Canada or internationally.
Proficiency in programming and machine learning (e.g., Python, R, scikit-learn, TensorFlow).
Familiarity with artists' materials, including pigments, binders, and their chemical properties.
Demonstrated research design, project management skills, and a demonstrated commitment to learn.
Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
Experience with spectroscopic and imaging techniques (i.e. XRF, FORS, multi/hyperspectral) (preferred).
Experience handling cultural heritage artifacts (preferred).
Understanding of risk assessment, data ethics, and lab safety protocols.

Ability to learn new software packages as required.
