Your role

CBC Radio is hiring a permanent full-time Associate Producer to work for Network Talk, assigned to As It Happens and based in Toronto.

The successful candidate will assume the role of assistant director: Using editorial judgement and editing skill to remake the show as we move across time zones, creating and uploading the podcast and Midnight Edition from the on-air programs, all on tight deadlines, in close coordination with the studio director.

Within this role there will be a wide range of opportunities to help As It Happens grow and evolve as the program continues through a period of change with a new host and new leadership team. In the coming months the As It Happens podcast will be redeveloped, and the successful candidate should have a keen interest in digital audio and podcasting. Additionally, the successful candidate will work closely with the team creating segments for the on-air program that build on the chemistry of our hosts and the traditional editorial strengths of As It Happens.

About As It Happens

As It Happens is a daily program that covers the events of the day in Canada and around the world, with stories told - whenever possible - by a principal, someone close to the story. The show has an almost limitless editorial range: politics; the environment; science, arts; all variety of weird and wonderful human behaviour. Treatments include: host interviews; tape; scripts; music; supported by strong digital and social media presentations of stories and podcasts.

Working under the direction and supervision of the Senior and Executive Producers, the successful candidate will be a proven journalist with exceptional critical thinking skills. They will demonstrate an understanding of the mandate of the program. Out of the universe of daily news, they will be able to identify what constitutes an As It Happens story, treatment and guest. They will be a strong writer, proven chase producer, and will have strong social media and digital skills.

The successful candidate will have high-level pitching and chasing skills in an eclectic and wide variety of areas; have broad range of knowledge and interests from popular culture to current affairs and everything in between; knowledge of and adherence to journalistic standards; experience in editing; strong and demonstrated cross-platform (web, digital, online) skills and ability to produce for multiple platforms including radio.

Along with their editorial skills, communication skills, and exceptional creativity, the successful candidate will be a committed team player. They will be a person who thrives in the pressure-filled environment of a daily current affairs program that is responsive to the news, and will have a proven ability to multitask and meet tight, daily deadlines.

Function:

With appropriate direction from one or more producers, participates in the production, direction and/or post-production of a program and/or program segment. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, practices and standards but initiative and independent judgement are required.

Key Tasks:

Contributes ideas for program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives.

Assists in developing program content including writing, researching, and/or editing. Prepares scripts; ensures adherence to the style and format of the program.

Sources interviewees, develops background, introduction, and line of questioning, conducts any necessary research, and ensures the briefing of hosts. Maintains contact files.

Writes, edits and illustrates copy for the web.

Participates in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.

As required, performs the following tasks:

- Produce program elements.

- Edit and mix, or direct the editing and mixing of audio elements.

- Write continuity, edit text, edit and prepare Listener response for broadcast.

- Log programs in appropriate information systems.

- Edit, encode, digitize and package audio and video material for the website using appropriate technologies.

- Assist in maintaining a level of communication or rapport with members of the audience which is both feasible and appropriate to the style and nature of the program.

- Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

University degree or equivalent. Degree in journalism or equivalent experience is considered to be an asset for this role.

Minimum of two years' relevant experience during which the candidate would gain exposure to journalism and the technology of radio or television broadcasting.

Proven track record pitching and chasing a range of stories including interviews, produced elements and creative treatments; working with humour and satire; developing columnists and regulars; and overall approach to innovative story-telling.

Proven ability to distil stories from the larger zeitgeist including the worlds of pop culture and entertainment, news and current affairs, lifestyle, sports, health, politics and international affairs with the intent of being relevant and connecting to a broad audience.

Broad experience in all aspects of story production including conducting pre-interviews, research, fact checking, sound mixing and editing and ensuring stories meet CBC's Journalistic Standards and Procedures.

Excellent and creative writing ability, the ability to write clearly yet with flair, and to write in the voice of the host.

Cultural awareness and sensitivity, and connection to diverse communities.

Proven experience with cross-platform and multi-media work including the web, social media, podcasting etc.

Excellent editorial judgement and critical-thinking skills.

Creative approach and commitment to innovative story-telling across platforms.

Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment and with tight deadlines, without sacrificing creativity or quality.

Ability to take critical feedback and incorporate it into the work.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to clearly explain concepts to peers.

Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns and methods.

Independent and self-motivated, combined with the ability to work well in a team environment.

Proven track record of ensuring a diversity of voices is reflected in storytelling. Contributes to the diversity of perspectives on the team.

High level of organization and productivity.

Able to work flexible hours.
