Your role

CBC North in Whitehorse is looking for a bright, energetic, and creative Associate Producer - Technician (AP-Tech) for Yukon Morning, a radio program that is alive with the sound and spirit of the territory, giving listeners the news and information they need to start their day and a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

You will be the primary technical operator for Yukon Morning and join in on air with the host and morning news reader, as part of the morning show team.

You are a people person with a passion for the Yukon, the North and its diverse people and perspectives, someone who loves getting up early and working in a fast-paced environment.

You have strong technical, sound production and sound editing skills, often working under pressure and troubleshooting technical issues.

You will pitch and produce a wide range of current affairs stories, with a focus on local news and community storytelling, finding the best people to talk about those subjects.

You will write clear, focused scripts for interviews, demonstrating exceptional skills in verbal and written communication.

You will also gather and edit audio, and at times video, and contribute to the promotion of content on our digital platforms and social media.

Please note that: This is a full-time position from 05:00 a.m. to 13:45 p.m.

Key tasks

Directs a program, either live or pre-packaged, in-studio or at a remote location.

Calls or brings in guests to the studio during the morning show.

Assists in developing program content including writing, researching, gathering and/or editing.

Prepares scripts; in keeping with the style and format of radio programs.

Photographs guests in-studio, in the field etc. for social media posts and use in digital environments.

Contributes ideas for program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives.

Participates in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.

Organizes the participation of interviewees, creative contributors and other participants, develops background, introduction and question lines, conducts or arranges for any necessary research and ensures the briefing of hosts.

Gathers audio/video as well as producing local stories on a wide range of news and current affairs topics.

Assists in maintaining a level of communication or rapport with members of the audience which is appropriate to the style and nature of the program.

Prepares, delivers and records daily weather breaks during and after the show.

Uploads interviews to the CBC Listen page and contributes to social media pages.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

Combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from university.

At least three years of practical and relevant experience or graduation from community college.

A demonstrated passion for, knowledge, and understanding of Northern and Yukon First Nation politics and culture, alongside both Canadian and wider International political issues.

Solid journalistic skills.

Excellent radio and production skills.

Previous experience working in a national or local newsroom in production.

Demonstrated ability to develop meaningful stories and develop contacts.

Must have the ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and efficiently, and meet deadlines.

Innovative, flexible and calm under pressure.

Takes direction well, works cooperatively but is also a self-starter.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Embraces new technologies and is keen to expand the program online.

Comfortable interacting and presenting material live on-air.

Finds ways to use sound creatively.

Open to new ideas and approaches.

Curious, incisive and critical thinker.

Strong organisational skills.
