Our purpose:
Our journalism is rooted in communities, shedding light on the realities, complexities and diversities of life in Canada. We strive to engage and reflect the country\xe2\x80\x99s audiences and deepen understanding among all Canadians. We tell stories of Indigenous and diverse communities that strive to strengthen communication and understanding among all Yukoners.

Who we\xe2\x80\x99re looking for:
CBC Yukon has an amazing opportunity in Whitehorse. We\xe2\x80\x99re looking for an experienced journalist to help lead a team that drives local, innovative storytelling on audio, digital, video and social platforms. Our search is for someone who\xe2\x80\x99s decisive, creative and passionate about everything that makes the Yukon what it is - people, communities, cultures, languages, arts, sports, politics and businesses.

The North is a place some of us are fortunate enough to call home, a place of culture, tradition, challenges, perseverance and innovation. The Yukon was built around stories whispered, sung, shared around the circles of campfires. As journalists and members of communities ourselves, we work to acknowledge the wisdom, struggles and joy, all of which shape the social, political, economic and natural topography of the territory.

Indigenous Peoples are increasingly speaking out to claim their long-held rights and assert their power and influence. There are established and emerging immigrant communities. The Yukon is a territory in transition, where there\xe2\x80\x99s space to learn, to experience, to travel, to build a career and a life.

You inspire people to bring out their creative best. You guide the team throughout the production process, from pitch, to gathering, to roll out. You are committed to creating a trusting relationship with our audiences and our team.

You are aware of emerging trends around on-demand and streaming audio and video and you understand our different platforms, and how to shape a story to play into each one\xe2\x80\x99s strengths.

You understand the role of public media in connecting with and building a stronger local community. You have experience creating content that includes and reflects a diverse range of lived experiences.

As a multi-platform content producer assigned primarily to CBC Yukon\xe2\x80\x99s news coverage, your central role is building our daily newscasts and news-related programming for our weekday and weekend shows, working with dedicated reporters, producers and hosts to assign and collaboratively oversee the reporting and production of news stories and segments. You will lead daily team meetings to coordinate and participate in story chases while collaborating with news, digital and video producers in the Yukon, the North and across Canada.

You will also have the opportunity to initiate ideas and projects to engage and grow our audiences by reflecting and amplifying complex Northern stories. There will be latitude for initiative, independent judgement and creativity while adhering to CBC journalistic and program policies, standards, and practices. Besides the regular and ongoing requirement to coordinate the work of others you\xe2\x80\x99ll also get regular opportunities to initiate and produce work yourself, including news stories, long-form pieces, audio and video paks.

Working with an editorial leadership team led by CBC Yukon\xe2\x80\x99s Executive Producer, you\xe2\x80\x99ll guide reporters and other program staff to cover the stories and issues affecting our diverse audiences across the Yukon. An understanding of local issues and our audiences is essential.

We are looking for someone with a passion for news, someone who loves the thrill of the chase and the responsibility of getting focused information and insight to our audiences quickly and thoughtfully. You are organised, detail-oriented and confident in making firm decisions and giving definitive direction. You\xe2\x80\x99re also open to suggestions and dialogue. This position requires the aptitude of an air-traffic controller, the instincts of a forecaster and the heart of a collaborator.

You will coordinate a team of reporters that brings our audiences breaking news, information and insight across broadcast (audio, television and digital platforms. You encourage and motivate others to do their best. You are less a gatekeeper and more of a door opener, embracing curiosity and a spirit of innovation in storytelling.

Experience working in news on all platforms will ground how you assign reporters on a day-to-day basis. You may also gather for audio, digital and video, as required. You\xe2\x80\x99re an independent thinker, demonstrating sound journalistic and critical judgement, initiative and creativity. You have a strong knowledge of Canada\xe2\x80\x99s Indigenous communities. A good knowledge of Yukon and Yukon First Nations, the territory\xe2\x80\x99s news and current affairs, its cultures, characters and histories, is a significant asset.

As required, you will perform the following tasks:

  • Stay on top of local and regional news and current affairs from a variety of sources and also assist in mapping out and scheduling coverage.
  • Respond to and help lead breaking news coverage
  • Regularly conceive and develop original and relevant story ideas \xe2\x80\x93 both with members of the station\xe2\x80\x99s team and cultivating your own contributions to our coverage
  • Mentor and coach new reporters through regular, constructive feedback and follow up.
  • Lead daily meetings on news coverage
  • Plan, assign and coordinate preparation of audio newscasts, video news stories and digital stories.
  • Research, gather, write and/or edit stories and support others in the same tasks.
  • Vet and edit broadcast copy and stories and text written by others.
  • Plan and participate in longer-term projects that support the objectives of the Yukon station.
  • Communicate and collaborate with colleagues at other locations on locally-generated material that serves programming in other regions and across the network.
  • Provide and submit risk assessments for staff going out on assignments
  • Cultivate new sources to help better represent people, communities and perspectives in the Yukon
  • Build relationships with our audiences

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Excellent knowledge of current and local events and issues
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and motivating a team or unit.
  • Advanced knowledge of video, audio and digital production
  • Demonstrated coaching, mentoring and vetting skills
  • Experience programming and producing audio shows in addition to demonstrated skills in and understanding of digital, video and mobile platforms.
  • Superior editorial skills and judgement and demonstrated knowledge of CBC\xe2\x80\x99s journalistic standards and practices
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work both independently and cooperatively.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly developed organisational skills; ability to multi-task and manage multiple demands and deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently generate original and creative story ideas and treatments.
  • Excellent editing/production skills in Dalet and other audio editing software .
  • A valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s licence and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada\xe2\x80\x99s insurance company
  • University degree or equivalent preferred.
  • At least five years of relevant experience is preferred.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
