The Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society is a highly specialized research, policy and solutions initiative at the University of Toronto that draws on world-class research expertise across multiple academic divisions; regional, national, and international academic partners; and commercial and community organizations and translates research into concrete solutions and policy guidance. Your opportunity:

As Associate Director, Research Engagement, you will play a critical leadership role in supporting and advancing our research activities, driven by our mission of ensuring that advanced technologies benefit everyone. Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with the Director and Chair of the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology & Society to ensure alignment of our research agenda with short and long-term strategic priorities with a special emphasis on supporting and expanding an interdisciplinary and innovative research community. You will maintain a comprehensive awareness of the portfolio of research interests across our community and of available research and funding opportunities, review and advise on new research projects, and identify potential collaborations and opportunities to mobilize and amplify research affiliated with the Institute.

You will also oversee the day-to-day operations of SRI\'s research operations. Harnessing your leadership skills, you will actively inform research budget planning and implementation; grant management; assist with the development and delivery of seminar series, discussion groups, workshops, academic conferences, and fellows programs. Additionally, you will supervise, mentor and support a high-performing team of administrative staff and foster impactful engagement with researchers affiliated with the Institute.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing day-to-day service delivery requirements and operational needs
  • Cultivating ongoing, high-profile prospective partnerships that advance strategic agendas; developing marketing and partnership plans that support research needs and objectives
  • Delivering presentations to promote programs, opportunities and/or initiatives
  • Promoting and advancing institute interests to industry representatives and government officials; Writing grant applications; Developing written materials for research events, conference, symposia, journal publications
  • Settling research agreement terms with sponsor and funding agencies
  • Conducting detailed analysis of grant application policy to maximize research funding
  • Producing complex reports involving statistical and/or financial information for funding agencies; Monitoring and reporting on the performance of the Institutes research program and activities
  • Planning and estimating financial resources required for programs and/or projects; Monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts
Essential Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or Doctorate with interdisciplinary focus across sciences and social sciences or humanities, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum five years of recent and relevant experience with strong skills in research methods (quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods), and expertise with research in the domain of technology and society.
  • Demonstrated experience in a research management and operations leadership role with supervisory responsibilities, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Experience writing and contributing to grant proposals and academic publications and delivering presentations to large audiences.
  • Experience with research ethics board submission requirements and processes.
  • Knowledge of research funding landscape (including commercialization of research) .
  • Demonstrated human resources experience managing and mentoring teams and leading change.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative and collegial manner, with a strong appreciation for the challenges and opportunities for working within a large, decentralized organization.
  • Well-developed financial acumen, including budget planning, and developing grant budgets and business cases.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication (oral and written) and organizational skills.
  • Strong leadership and team building skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to problem solve in a complex environment.
  • Strong decision-making skills.
  • Strong planning skills, focusing on executing and completing tasks under pressure and managing conflicting priorities and deadlines.

  • Strong ability to quickly grasp complex processes and procedures and develop a comprehensive understanding of research administration policies and practices in a university environment.
  • Ability to foster and maintain effective working relationships with individuals at all levels, both internal and external to the University.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing tasks and deadlines.

USW Pay Band 15 -- $86,011 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $109,993. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
