The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $103,784 - $129,731 maximum starting salary is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity.

Performance range: starting salary to max of $149,191 is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for what the world sees, hears and in many respects thinks about the University of Victoria. From the stories people read to the advertisements they see, this associate director position creates a compelling narrative that encourages curiosity and action from several critical public audiences such as government officials, industry, prospective partners and donors, students and all of their influencers.

Making use of an integrated marketing and communications philosophy, this role strategically and actively employs earned, owned and paid channels to get measurable results that go beyond vanity metrics.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, the associate director is member of the senior leadership team within the University Communications and Marketing department. It is expected that the associate director will develop among their team a culture of experimentation, data-driven decision making, creativity, accountability and strategic thinking.

Mandate or core purpose of role

The core purpose of this role is to oversee the integrated marketing and communications strategies that attract, retain and encourage ongoing engagements with key audiences, including students, student influencers, governments, policy advisors, donors, alumni, industry and partners.

By positioning the university as the place they want to work with, study with, or support, the role plays an integral role in the brand health of the institution and has the ability to have a huge positive impact.

As a member of the UC+M senior leadership team, this role helps provide guidance and the strategic direction of the department including a key contributor to the institutional integrated marketing and communications plan (IMC plan), as well as the overall leadership and culture of the department. From time to time, this role may be required to be the acting Associate Vice President of UC+M when the AVP is absent or unavailable.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and experience
Bachelor\'s degree in communications, advertising, marketing, public relations, journalism or relevant discipline or an equivalent level of education training and experience

Minimum of six to ten years of marketing AND communications including:
  • Developing and implementing institutional marketing strategies differentiated by audience with measurable outcomes.
  • Tracking the success of marketing campaigns and communications initiatives by measuring social media KPIs, earned media share of voice, Google Analytics, etc.
  • Experience in strategic enrolment and recruitment marketing in higher education.
  • Demonstrated successful integrated marketing campaign included all aspects of earned, owned and paid media.
  • Deep understanding of project discovery, briefing, creative development, project execution and measurement.
  • Agency or internal creative team leadership experience desired
  • In-depth marketing industry knowledge and thorough understanding of best practices in: typography, illustration, photography, color theory, motion graphics, multimedia authoring tools and corporate identity
  • Expert level understanding of branding principles and hierarchy
  • Technical fluency with broad digital marketing channel experience and a deep understanding of and experience with interconnected marketing technologies, ad platforms, web analytics, attribution modeling, and HubSpot or similar CRM.
  • A proven track record of proactive issues communications management and reputational issues identification.
Knowledge requirements include:
  • Strategic use of marcom and media platforms, (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Mailchimp, Meltwater, etc.) and online social media advertising platforms (e.g. Facebook Ads Manager, Google Ads and LinkedIn Ads Manager), understanding of the demographics, behavior and conventions of their respective participants, and how each platform can be optimally deployed in different scenarios to achieve an organization\'s goals and objectives. Understanding of related legislation and risks.
  • Familiarity with post-secondary education structure and culture
  • Leadership including coaching, training and teambuilding

Unusual working conditions

This position often requires very short preparation times due to the unpredictable nature of issues, the speed and escalation potential of social media, as well as the position being responsive to executive members on very short deadlines.

There are expectations to achieve goals and absorb constant interruptions as additional goals are either added or changed.

The position requires the ability to deal calmly with complex decision making during stressful and demanding situations.

Weekend and/or evening calls may happen once or twice a month or more frequently during a time of crisis or reputational risk. Like most management excluded positions, there is an expectation that email is monitored in off hours.
