Unit 4E4 is a 25-bed unit caring for patients from birth to 18 years of age. Patient populations on 4E4 may include general pediatric medicine, neurology, metabolics, nephrology, pulmonary/respiratory, mental health and overflowing oncology, hematology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, and general surgery. As a member of the multidisciplinary team, the Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) provides front-line leadership and clinical support in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for the mentioned populations in accordance with both, University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) and Stollery Children\'s Hospital, policies, and procedures. The role Assistant Head Nurse - Pediatric Medicine 4E4 will utilize nursing processes through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making; while providing active education and mentorship for peers, students, patients, and families. Your practice will include responsibilities such as a proactive approach to resource management, actively working on discharge coordination and utilizing a family-centered care perspective to plan. The staff on 4E4 provide care to patients with a variety of medical diagnoses with specialized training focused on those with neurological disorders requiring telemetry, nephrology patients requiring peritoneal dialysis and complex medical patients requiring mechanical ventilation. The AHN is a resource for frontline staff, participates in staff development, and ensures the delivery of high-quality safe patient care. The AHN participates in quality improvement working groups and initiatives that foster safe patient care delivery and practices. The AHN works in liaison with the leadership team for the Medicine Program. Two positions available for this posting.

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
