Your opportunity:

Under the general direction of the Director of Campus Safety, the Assistant Director, Campus Safety will provide administrative leadership for law enforcement, crime prevention, public safety and security programs that ensure a safe and secure environment for members of the campus community, and protects and safeguards the property of the University. The incumbent provides direction to an operational unit of Corporals, Constables, and Building Patrol, ensuring the effectiveness of departmental operations. S/he works in partnership with the Director of Campus Safety to assess campus community safety and security needs, and designs, implements, evaluates and modifies a wide variety of related programs and services.

As a member of the management team, the Assistant Director assists with directing the department\'s operational and financial activities, participates in the planning of long and short term departmental goals and objectives, develops and fosters community and external relations, and evaluates departmental performance to ensure conformance with the University\'s mission, goals and objectives.

The incumbent also acts as a liaison within the UTM community to broaden the understanding of Campus Safety operations, in the provision of safety and security to students, staff, faculty and visitors on campus, and the protection and safeguarding of University property. The Assistant Director will be required to perform the role of Director, Campus Safety during absences.

Qualifications:

Essential Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in law enforcement or equivalent combination of education and experience. Expert knowledge of the Criminal Code. Relevant training in community policing plus specific training in related areas such as dispute resolution.
  • Minimum 10 years\' experience in a leadership role in policing/law enforcement with a recognized law enforcement agency, preferably in a university or other post-secondary educational institution police services setting.
  • At least 5 years\' experience managing a large group in a unionized or similar environment, and experience interpreting and applying Collective Agreements.
  • Strong leadership skills with a proven ability to motivate and build a team.
  • Experience managing budgets, staff schedules, overseeing investigations, developing and implementing safety programs, and managing projects is required.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of the applicable laws, legislations and codes (e.g., Criminal Code, Human Rights Code, etc.).
  • Must be certified in appropriate licensing and training (i.e., Use of Force, CPR, First Aid) as required for a Special Constable Appointment.
  • Must have strong time management skills, report writing skills, strong computer skills in Word and Excel.
  • Excellent staff management, team leadership, and motivational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and conflict resolution skills.
  • The ability to align policing and community initiatives to support the goals of the campus community including faculty, staff and students.
  • Ability to develop and foster partnerships, and collaborate with multiple constituents while dealing effectively and professionally with people at all levels in a highly diverse community.
  • Must have a valid G driver\'s license.
Preference will be given to those candidates who have a CPTED certification and who currently hold Special Constable Status with the Peel Regional Police Services Board; however, all applicants must be able to meet the requirements for this status.
