The Institute of Islamic Studies (IIS) at the University of Toronto incubates advanced research projects in the study of Islam and Muslims. A collaborative researchspace, the IIS brings together researchers from across disciplines, regional interests, and historical periods. Engaging research leaders, artists, public policy institutes, and community organizations, the IIS is an intellectual crossroad where people and ideas meet, develop, and transform.

Your opportunity:
Reporting to the Director, IIS, the Archivist, Muslims in Canada Archives is responsible for developing policies and procedures for managing the Muslims in Canada Archives, in particular community-based cataloguing systems, records preservation and stewardship, and finding aids. A key component of this role will be the appraisal, acquisition and processing of archival materials to build and develop an archival collection for research purposes, which will include the authentication of documents and records, and researching the origins and significance of archival materials.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing plans and process improvements for collections acquisition activities
  • Conceptualizing, organizing and executing program activities
  • Analyzing documents to assess and verify their authenticity
  • Interpreting and applying rules and regulations on the use of collection materials
  • Performing original descriptive cataloguing of resources and/or archival materials
  • Maintaining a digital asset management system
  • Assessing and determining the condition of archival materials
  • Directing the activities of casual staff
Essential Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in information or archival studies, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum four years of recent and related experience with working in archives or related information and collections management, on or about Muslims in Canada.
  • Experience working with community-based archives, specifically with respectto communities of immigrant/refugee backgrounds.
  • Experience creating educational programming that integrates archival professional practices with community-based engagement.
  • Experience working in a cataloguing unit that uses a Library Management System (i.e. SIRSI), a library classification system (e.g. Library of Congress) and/or non-MARC metadata schemas.
  • Experience with metadata schemes (i.e. Dublin Core, MARC, RDA, RDF, MODS, VRA Core and others).
  • Experience in archives or related information management environment using a web-based archival description software such as AtoM.
  • Strong communicator with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Professional fluency in a related language (e.g. Farsi, Arabic, Urdu, Punjabi, Bahassa, Swahili, etc.).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and client service orientation.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, and to manage competing, new, and changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and digital communications platforms.
Assets (Nonessential):
  • Knowledge and experience with the IIS or the Faculty of Arts and Science.
  • Cultural competencies and familiarity with Muslim contributions to Canadian heritage.

USW Pay Band 12 -- $71,842 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $91,875. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
