Job Description

The Correctional Services Supervisor reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Director of Six Nations Social Services and within the policies and procedures established by Six Nations Elected Council, and in accordance with the relevant Social Services mission statement, values, and principles.



The Supervisor / Native Corrections Officer is responsible for ensuring the effective delivery and management of the Six Nations - Grand River Correctional Services programs.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:





Minimum Requirements:


Must possess a bachelor's degree with a preference given to the following area(s) of expertise: law, criminology, social work, social sciences, or other related fields of study. Must have a minimum of 2 years' management or supervision experience including staff supervision and financial management. Must successfully complete the Probation & Parole Officer's Basic Training Program Weeks 1& 2 (maximum of two attempts allowed to pass PPO Basic Weeks 1&2 Exams) plus all other training and exams (maximum of two attempts each allowed to pass all other exams). Must build a knowledge base of the Criminal Justice System of Ontario.




Other Related Skills:


Must possess accurate, clear, concise oral and written communication skills. Must possess solid organizational, time management and administrative skills and be able to prioritize workload. Must demonstrate ability to use computer hardware/software to effectively input and retrieve information. Must be able to work with a variety of personalities and temperaments. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and within a team concept. Must be willing to work flexible hours as required. Must possess the knowledge/ability to interpret/apply relevant legislation. Must be knowledgeable of Six Nations community resources/agencies, as well as external resources/agencies in surrounding areas. Must be knowledgeable of traditional approaches to helping Indigenous clients. Must have a valid Class "G" Driver's License, a reliable vehicle and proper insurance coverage

POSITION TITLE:

Supervisor-Native Corrections Officer


REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:





Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Director of Six Nations Social Services and within the policies and procedures established by Six Nations Elected Council, and in accordance with the relevant Social Services mission statement, values, and principles.


PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:





The Supervisor / Native Corrections Officer is responsible for ensuring the effective delivery and management of the Six Nations - Grand River Correctional Services programs.



KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:



Technical Functions:


Manage the day-to-day operations of Six Nations - Grand River Correctional Services and its staff. Provided community supervision of adult probation and parole clients assigned to the Supervisor according to the Ministry of Solicitor General policies, procedures, and standards.

Administrative Functions:


Preparing administrative reports, including monthly statistical data, as required by the Ministry of Solicitor General and the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services-Youth Justice Services. Preparing monthly Operational Reports (which includes budget & monthly schedules), Staffing Reports, and Quarterly/Annual Evaluation Reports for the Director of Social Services. Preparing the Ministry of Solicitor General and the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services-Youth Justice Services budget submissions for Six Nations Council Approval and submission to the Ministry as per indicated timeframes. On-going monitoring of the programs to ensure services and service delivery/programming are following applicable legislation & regulations, and policies and procedures and standards of the respective Ministries and Six Nations Elected Council. Performing annual program audits in accordance with the respective Ministries Audit Guidelines. Reviewing and approving expenditures, i.e., travel claims, supplies, new equipment, and upgrades to computer systems. On-going monitoring of the program budgets to ensure operation is within budget. Preparing annual Human Resource and Training Plans for the enhancement and development of the programs. On-going recruitment of students, approving and assigning appropriate placements and ensuring the effective work environment of all personnel.

Communication Functions:


Attending meetings as required by the Ministry of the Solicitor General, the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, the Director of Social Services, Six Nations Elected Council, or any other relevant meeting arranged by Justice and community stakeholders. Completing on-going research and preparation of budget submission arguments for the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, the Director of Social Services. On-going liaison with the Ministry of the Solicitor General and Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services-Youth Justice Services, to ensure up to date information is being received regarding policies, procedures, and standards. On-going liaison and relationship development with Police Services, Crown Attorney's Offices, Courts, and other Justice stakeholders and community organizations/agencies to gather information and ensure efficient and effective service delivery. A Public Relations resource for the community regarding the criminal justice system, i.e., legal system, police, detention institutions, legal services, pardons, & referrals.

Other Functions:



Other related duties assigned by the Director of Social Services include but are not limited to acting as the Alternate to the Reception Manager in the Community Emergency Plan.



WORKING CONDITIONS:


Considerable external contact with non-profit organizations. Direct staff and client contact with young people, probationers, conditional sentence clients and extra-judicial sanctions participants. Maybe some risks due to predisposition of some clients. Considerable travel to surrounding communities using own transportation. Attending meetings regarding staff & program operations. Varied work hours due to schedule and client availability. Working in a climate controlled environment.

Clients - acts as a role model, provides guidance, direction, and encouragement.



External agencies - in a professional manner represents and promotes Six Nations interests relative to Six Nations - Grand River Correctional Services, Community Service Order Program.



The Public - in a professional manner represents and promotes the Six Nations - Grand River Correctional Services, Community Service Order Program regarding the cultural concerns and needs of the community.



Social Services is the designated Emergency Response Centre.



In the event of a community emergency, the Social Services Administration building is the central evacuation centre.



In the event of an emergency all Social Services staff are expected to assist as needed.



IMPACT OF ERROR:



Errors in judgment and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss of program funding, poor public relations & loss of public confidence, reduced/inadequate client service and legal liability.

Works within the organizational structure and administrative policies and procedures as established by the Six Nations Elected Council; and the policies, procedures, and standards of the Ministry of the Solicitor General and the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services as they relate to the Six Nations - Grand River Correctional Services, Community Service.
