Those looking for more information are invited to visit our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Policy The purpose of this position is to provide supervision to young persons with the highest levels of risk and needs and to enforce court orders (e.g., deferred custody and supervision orders, conditional supervision orders, and intensive rehabilitative custody supervision orders). The legal authority afforded Youth Justice Workers in enforcement of these orders is considerably more intrusive than those associated with probation orders and other forms of community sentences; the court and the public demand a high degree of accountability and intervention. In addition to supervising high-risk youth, the position is also responsible for providing timely and effective interventions to young people at risk of or in conflict with the law, focusing on rehabilitation, protection of the public, and repairing of harm to the victim. Duties include:
  • Perform detailed investigation assessments and Court report functions;
  • Provide leadership in case management activities including clinical and risk assessment, social histories, case planning, and monitoring of a complex caseload, including focus of successful integration of clients in the community;
  • Perform the cognitive-behavioral techniques of influencing change and establishing good rapport with the client and making the best use of community resources, as outlined in the STICS (Strategic Training Initiative in Community Supervision) approach;
  • Supervise and manage a complex high-risk caseload of probation, extrajudicial sanctions and measures, supervision cases, and clients participating in the fine option program and community service work;
  • Work in partnership with community youth workers, youth intervention outreach workers, custody and clinical staff, and professionals from other agencies to develop and implement appropriate case plans with clients;
  • Work with clients and families to provide rehabilitative services and providing protection for the public;
  • Refer clients to relevant assessment and treatment programs;
  • Provide assistance, consultation, support, and collaborative problem solving related to case and program issues to peers, courts, and other professionals;
  • Initiate breach proceedings, as required;
  • Attend court hearings of clients, preparing detailed court reports, and arranging relevant court reviews;
  • Develop partnerships with agencies and programs in the community related to service delivery; and
  • Other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Applicants must have a Masters degree in Social Sciences, preferably in Criminology or Social Work with considerable relevant work experience or a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Social Sciences, preferably in Criminology with extensive relevant work experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise complex caseloads with high risk/ needs and complex behaviours;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, Criminal Code of Canada, Criminal Justice system and relevant Provincial/ Federal legislation;
  • Knowledge of human/ criminal behaviours and high risk/ needs clientele and the ability to access community resources to meet the needs of our clients while ensuring the balance of rehabilitation of the client and the protection of the community/ public;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and time management skills, and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Experience in group facilitation;
  • Ability to work independently and/ or within a team;
  • Successful candidate must have an acceptable Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector prior to employment;
  • Applicants must be eligible for registration with their relevant professional provincial registration board.
