The Youth Coordinator & Mentor is responsible for developing, organizing, and delivering programs and activities that promote the social, emotional, cultural, and physical well-being of youth in Sawridge First Nation. The role focuses on empowering youth through cultural reconnection, leadership development, life skills training, and recreation.
The Youth Coordinator & Mentor works closely with Elders, community leaders, schools, and other service providers to support youth in living healthy, positive lives rooted in their identity as members of Sawridge First Nation. Members live both within and outside the community.
Key Responsibilities
Program Development & Delivery
Plan, organize, and lead youth activities such as sports, arts, traditional teachings, land-based learning, and leadership programs.
Develop programming that promotes wellness, education, and cultural pride.
Coordinate after-school, evening, and weekend programs for youth ages To Be Determined - [range, e.g., 10-25].
Facilitate workshops on topics such as goal-setting, substance-use prevention, career readiness, and cultural knowledge.
Cultural and Community Engagement
Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and cultural leaders to include traditional teachings and language in youth programming.
Support youth participation in community events, ceremonies, and cultural gatherings.
Encourage youth to take active roles in community planning and leadership.
Partnerships & Collaboration
Work with schools, social services, recreation staff, and health programs to coordinate youth supports.
Develop partnerships with nearby First Nations and organizations for joint programming and events.
Seek opportunities for youth exchanges, leadership camps, and cultural trips.
Administration
Maintain accurate program records, attendance, and reports.
Assist in preparing budgets and funding proposals for youth programming.
Report to the Executive Director and Chief & Council on program outcomes and youth engagement.
Safety & Mentorship
Provide a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all youth.
Serve as a positive role model and mentor.
Follow all community and child safety protocols.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Diploma or degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Recreation, Education, Indigenous Studies, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
1-3 years of experience working with youth, preferably in a First Nation or Indigenous community setting.
Experience in program planning, event coordination, or mentorship.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions, and youth challenges.
Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to plan engaging, culturally relevant activities.
Organizational and budgeting skills.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle preferred.
Current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check required.
Assets
Knowledge of local language, culture, and community.
First Aid / CPR certification.
Experience writing grants or funding proposals.
Outdoor leadership or land-based education skills.
Working Conditions
Based at the Sawridge First Nation Admin Office.
Combination of office, outdoor, and community-based activities.
May require travel to workshops, cultural gatherings, or training sessions.

Pay: $55,000.00-$65,000.00 per year
