Summary: The Youth Academy Program Activity Leader assists the Academy Coordinator to provide settlement services and integration support to immigrant and refugee youth through activity based programming. This includes the K-Grade 7 After School Program, The Youth Centre, and summer programming.
  • All applicants must be in Canada and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
**This position will remain open until filled. Responsibilities:
  • provide opportunities for immigrant and refugee youth to be engaged, productive members in their community;
  • develop an outreach strategy/training & support system that will engage local immigrant and refugee youth;
  • support young people in different settings, including outreach work;
  • act as an in class instructor for the after school drop in program;
  • work in conjunction with other settlement staff support, newcomer youth and volunteers to develop life skills and interpersonal skills;
  • engage and empower youth to join volunteer positions;
  • assist in providing information sessions for youth in areas pertinent to settlement issues such as financial literacy, rights and responsibilities and about life in Canada;
  • assist with the running of arts-based activities, community/environmental projects, residential activities, outdoor education and sporting activities;
  • mentor, coach and support individuals and encourage greater social inclusion;
  • collaborate with other organisations that support young people such as social care, health, police, education, youth offending teams and local authorities;
  • attend regular training and development opportunities to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding, health and safety and local policy developments; and
  • other related duties as assigned by the Youth Academy Coordinator and CEO.
Qualifications:
  • Fluency in English. Must possess good written, verbal, and presentation skills;
  • familiar with social and educational needs of youth and understanding of ethnic diversity issues;
  • experience in working with youth;
  • well developed interpersonal and relationship building skills;
  • ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with youth, community partners, staff, and volunteers;
  • good organisational skills, ability to multitask while maintaining a high level of accuracy in data collection
  • committed to teamwork and able to work independently;
  • familiar with Google Docs, Windows, Email and the Internet
  • self-motivated, creative, and energetic;
  • ability to work as part of an effective team with other program staff, community members, and other community professionals; and
  • act as a positive role model to the youth that attend the programs.
Deadline for applications: Until filled Preferred Start Date: Apr 17, 2023 Job Designation: Full-time Schedule: Monday to Friday 12:00 to 8:00 pm (one hour unpaid lunch). During school vacation and school PD days the schedule would be 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Hours: 35 hours/week Salary: $20.00/hour
