The New College Writing Centre invites applications for a Writing Instructor position focused on English Language Learning for the 2023-24 Fall/Winter session. The position will begin on August 29, 2023 and continue through April 30, 2024. It will consist of at least 340 hours and will require frequent, though flexible, weekday availability during both terms, on-site and online.

Our Context:

The ELL Program partners with writing centres to offer challenging non-credit instruction designed to help students reach the highest levels of academic language needed by undergraduates across the disciplines. Instruction focuses on scholarly reading, academic writing, and oral presentation. ELL also partners with faculty in a range of credit courses from 100 to 400 level in humanities, sciences, and social sciences to embed language instruction appropriate to the course discipline and level.

Writing instructors in Arts & Science offer skilled, sensitive and supportive writing instruction designed to enable students to realize their full potential as learners and contributors to knowledge production-in their fields of study, in the wider community and in professional life. Our instructional approach emphasizes writing and language use as complex abilities that are continuously learned and relearned in relation to changing contexts and purposes.

Description of Duties:

This ELL Specialist Writing Instructor position will involve developing and delivering both online and in-person interactive, mulit-modal reading, writing, and oral presentation curricula. The position may include teaching workshops on ELL approaches for students, faculty, or teaching assistants. The successful candidate will design and teach innovative curricula for a non-credit Oral Presentation course for multilingual students and will assist the ELL coordinator in developing e-modules for use in large classes across the Faculty of Arts and Science.

$53.41/hour + 4% vacation pay

$54.44/hour + 6% vacation pay

$57.42/hour + 6% vacation pay

Writing Instructor II - Long Term

$58.58/hour + 6% vacation pay

Writing Instructor II (Priority)

$59.11/hour + 6% vacation pay

Writing Instructor II (Priority) - Long Term

$60.29/hour + 6% vacation pay

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching writing and communication skills to students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Previous experience teaching English as an additional language at the university level, either in a writing centre, as part of an English Language Learning program, or in university courses with significant writing components
  • At least a completed Masters degree
  • Superior ability to use a variety of digital platforms to create sophisticated, interactive digital pedagogical materials
  • Experience creating videos, podcasts, and webinar-based writing curricula
  • Significant experience investigating and choosing appropriate software options for various curriculum projects
  • Ability to integrate feedback and assessment mechanisms into audio-visual curricula
  • Ability to identify and implement best practices for creating AODA and WCAG compliant online curricula
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to teach academic writing and critical skills in a one-to-one mode and across a variety of disciplines and programs
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate interactive workshops
  • Familiarity with forms of writing and oral communication in a broad range of disciplinary curricula, including sciences, social sciences and humanities
  • The ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a highly collaborative environment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A completed PhD or completed PhD coursework
  • Previous experience working in the University of Toronto\'s English Language Learning program
