About the Organization

The Mennonite New Life Centre is a vibrant, multi-cultural settlement agency for newcomers to Canada. The Centre provides settlement services, language instruction, mental health support and capacity building workshops, public education and bridging to employment. Our BREM program is funded by the government of Ontario, and it supports the career development of internationally trained mental health professionals by providing training and supervised work experience to facilitate labour market integration within the mental health field in Canada.

The BREM Program currently offers two streams: Preparation for Employment (Stream E) and Preparation for Registration and Employment (Stream R). Most participants will be on a pathway towards becoming registered psychotherapists after successfully completing the Mental Health in Ontario course. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering this course providing academic leadership, creating interactive and supportive learning environments, coordinating guest speakers and site visits, and updating program objectives and instructional materials as needed. Essential components of this position: understanding the unique educational needs of internationally educated professionals, participating in program activities related to curriculum revision and staying current in the field.

About the Course

Teaching subject: Mental Health Practice in Ontario is an online synchronous course that aims to introduce internationally educated mental health professionals across Ontario to professional values and legislation, service delivery systems, and common practice area jobs in mental health in Ontario. Teaching will be a combination of instructional, experiential and reflective activities, including guest speakers and site visits (online and in person if possible).

The incumbent will have demonstrated in-depth knowledge and the ability to teach the following:

  • The principles governing MH practice of ON
  • The systemic reasoning for how MH is practiced in ON
  • The types of positions available in MH, the roles and responsibilities of the different positions, and the skills and qualifications required for competent practice of the profession in different roles
  • The principles of stigma and recovery model and their applications in the Canadian context of practice
  • Community Treatment Models, analyze them through cultural lenses and explore practical implications on provision of MH services
  • Laws that govern mental health professionals in Ontario and the roles and responsibilities of MH professionals in ON
  • Government income support programs and their relevance to specific cases
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of the bio-psycho-socio-spiritual components and apply a range of assessment methodologies in a range of scenarios.
  • Professional Duty to Report as mandated under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (2017) and the role of child protection services
  • Specific populations such as the elderly, adolescents, Indigenous peoples, LGBTQ2S population, etc.
  • Domestic violence within the context of Canadian practice and culture
Responsibilities
  • Prepare and deliver the instructional materials based on existing program curriculum (materials will be provided, though frequent revisions are required, and personal inputs welcomed).
  • Supplement course materials with activities that encourage participation and build upon participant knowledge and experiences in both a professional and socio-cultural context.
  • Daily set up of online course management platforms (Moodle and Zoom)
  • Identify and coordinate guest speakers and site visits in collaboration with the Academic Coordinator
  • Adapt instruction when necessary to meet diverse learning styles and needs.
  • Work in collaboration with the Academic team to upload and update learning materials on Moodle.
  • Evaluate participants\xe2\x80\x99 class work and mark assignments and written material using Program rubrics (competency-based assessment).
  • Complete the Participant performance Report as required by the Program.
  • Monitor, assess and provide feedback related to participant progress.
  • Advise and assist participants as needed with course materials and inquiries.
  • Evaluate and revise curricula, course content, course materials and methods of instruction as needed.
  • Collaborate with other instructors and program staff to address administrative, content and instructional issues.
Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:
  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in mental health related discipline (graduate degree in Social Work preferred)
  • Experience with adult education and adult education philosophy, including respect for the work and life experience brought to the classroom by the adult learner
  • Knowledge of and connection with the Ontario mental health care system
  • Understanding of challenges and systemic barriers to labour market integration for newcomer professionals
  • Passion for people and social justice. Empathy, cultural sensitivity and anti-oppression approach
  • Demonstrated skills in curriculum design; instructional design and delivery; active, collaborative learning techniques; assessment and evaluation of learning; and appropriate use of technology for teaching and learning
  • Commitment to lifelong learning, academic scholarship, professional integrity, and a track record of professional and academic development
  • Ability to be a role model and function effectively in a team environment
  • Excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal skills and ability to relate to a wide variety of learners from diverse cultures
Delivery dates

This contract position will begin September, 2023, and will continue until September 30th, 2024, with the possibility of an extension. This course will run twice per year (2 cohorts: Fall and Spring).

Instruction hours per cohort

96 hours of in-class instruction; two to three days a week; four hours a day, 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM (with a 30-min. lunch break), plus 30 hours of marking during a 4-month period.

The incumbent will be expected to dedicate 2-3 unpaid hours upon hire for preparation and knowledge transfer.

Hourly rate

$100/instructional hour for a total of $9,600, plus $50/marking hour for a total of $1,500 per cohort. The incumbent will be paid separately for meetings and major development activities with program staff.

This fee will include all course activities, such as communication with the Program to discuss course-related issues as needed, addressing student inquiries and concerns, and marking in-class participation activities, writing performance reports for the students, and completing the course rubrics.

Instruction method: Remote with the possibility of in person activities.

Instruction site (as required): 1122 Finch Ave. West, North York, ON and/or 2737 Keele St., North York, ON.
