Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the casual position of Winter Emera Oval Skating Monitor in Parks & Recreation.

Skating Monitors will work as part of the HRM Skating Oval team to monitor public skating and provide outstanding customer service for all participants. Skating monitors with experience in teaching skating lessons can have the opportunity to provide public skating lessons as scheduled. Monitors who indicate interest in skate sharpening could have the opportunity to learn the skill set. Skating Monitors will ensure the Oval is a safe, fun and festive atmosphere for all skating activities and events.



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise public skating sessions to ensure the safety of all participants both on and off the skating surface. Assist customers with selection, size and proper fitting of skates and helmets, collect and properly store photo IDs and keep inventory organized. Keep Oval surface, walkways and entrances safe and free of hazards. Provide excellent customer service to participants and spectators. Provide skating lessons during scheduled times (please indicate on your resume if you are interested in participating in skating instruction on top of skating monitor tasks). Skate Sharpening (please indicate on your application) Carry out emergency procedures and provide First Aid treatment as required. Demonstrate initiative in assisting with delivery of programs and festival activities. Carry out assigned duties in an effective and responsible manner. Report any accidents / incidents to onsite supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS:



Education and Experience:

Previous related experience is an asset Experience in customer service delivery Experience working or volunteering in recreational programs Proficient and confident ice skater Have or are willing to obtain Intermediate First Aid, CPR Level B or willing to obtain by December 20, 2025. Must be willing to attend all orientations/training sessions.

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

Must be a competent and proficient skater and can skate in a variety of weather conditions. Ability to work effectively with staff and patrons to carry out assigned duties in a warm and friendly manner. Ability to communicate effectively and provide direction to participants Take an enthusiastic approach on and off the skating surface Have Stamina to skate outdoors in various weather conditions Applicant must have current certification in Intermediate First Aid, CPR Level B (CSA Basic) Applicant must complete screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a Police Records Check; Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS training Applicants must be willing to attend all orientations/training sessions.

Requirements:

Applicants may be required to complete a skating evaluation prior to hiring.



Security Clearance Requirements:

Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.



Please note -

Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer's discretion.

WORK STATUS:

Seasonal, December 5, 2025 - March 31, 2026



HOURS OF WORK:

Number of weeks and hours per week will depend on the Oval operational schedule and participant levels. The Oval may be closed or staff hours reduced due to weather or poor conditions, construction delays, site damage, low participation levels and/or special events. Monitors will not be paid if attendance at work is not required due to the above-noted conditions.



SALARY:

Non-Union, $19.50 per hour (plus 4% vacation). Skate sharpeners will receive a $1.00 per hour premium while performing skate sharpening tasks while working as a monitor. (Please indicate on your application if you are interested in skate sharpening.)
