Job Overview


This role is responsible for leading the Individual line of business teams (including Annuities), planning and execution of Individual strategies, including Operations, product management, product development, pricing, reinsurance, analytics, guidelines, and policy, as well as overall portfolio analysis and quality review. This includes managing the operational needs of a member and broker focused organization and partnering across the enterprise to get the best results. The role provides guidance to the SVP, Chief Operating Officer and the Life Executive Leadership Team on Individual strategy, including risk appetite, risk management and analytics.
Job Responsibilities
  • Manage the overall P & L of the Individual Business
  • Manage Individual business strategy to advance the Company\'s performance by driving improvements in revenue, profit, claims ratio, and expense ratio.
  • Collaborate with direct reports, Senior Leadership, and internal stakeholders to identify and invest in strategic market opportunities within the individual space to maintain and profitably grow the Company\'s market presence within the defined risk appetite.
  • Ensure efficient business processes are developed and adopted within Individual business that are aligned to Life\xe2\x80\x99s strategic and operational plans.
  • Identify and monitor significant trends in the Individual business, by Distributor and Product line. Inform senior leadership of any issues/trends and provide proactive and insightful observations and suggestions for improvement.
  • Oversee performance management activities by developing and tracking key metrics including an annual and quarterly Balanced Scorecard process and other relevant KPIs.
  • Drive the Company\'s product strategy, quality review, and portfolio analysis by ensuring appropriate talent management within the Individual team, with a focus on ensuring leaders and teams have access to the necessary tools, coaching and development opportunities.
  • Support the ongoing business transformation and other strategic projects, and provide guidance on product, pricing, quality, and portfolio management decisions.
  • Actively participate in Life\xe2\x80\x99s Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and shape the long-term strategic vision for the Life company.
  • Oversee the creation of new Individual products, changes, pricing, policy and guidelines based on knowledge and customer and distribution feedback. Maintain pricing models to ensure they are current and have satisfactory controls in place.
  • Colloborate with Sales & Distribution and Operations leaders in the development of internal and external implementation plans and communications for new products, product changes, and new policies and guidelines to raise awareness and commitment to execution.
  • Manage relationships with key reinsurance and outsourced partners where appropriate to manage risk and influence and negotiate favourable terms.
  • Liaise with provincial regulators, internal and external auditors and ensuring the auditors are provided timely and relevant information during their audits and/or oversight reviews.


Qualifications


  • 15+ years of experience in a related field, with 6+ years of diverse experience leading at least 2 functions in an insurance organization: product, pricing, operations, quality review, and/or analytics.
  • Post-Secondary degree preferably in business, actuarial science, or another relevant discipline.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to influence and gain respect, credibility and confidence from others.
  • Ability to make excellent and well justified decisions in complex and high-pressure situations, often with less than complete information.
  • Ability to develop and implement comprehensive plans and solutions that bridge complex issues that span across time.
  • Strong business acumen with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to recognize and identify critical issues, and make recommendations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively convey ideas in a persuasive and eloquent manner.
  • Relevant industry-related designations would be an asset.
