We\xe2\x80\x99re searching for someone who\xe2\x80\x99s curious, collaborative, who wants to learn and who loves to produce multi-platform stories with compelling visuals, rich audio and great writing. We are seeking a skilled, visual journalist who can shoot and edit video and still photography to engage with and reflect the stories, the people, their cultures, their diversity, their hopes and dreams, their concerns, challenges and ideas.The Yukon is changing and now, perhaps more than ever, it\xe2\x80\x99s important to document and understand these shifts, put them into context, to listen and help tell the stories of the new North of 60. You have a solid understanding of the diverse cultures of Northern Canada.Assigned primarily as a Video Journalist, your objective is to research, gather and analytically report information and perspective from various sources and raise issues requiring further investigation and accountability. You will be expected to gather, produce and present material, on a daily basis, for Northbeat, CBC North\xe2\x80\x99s pan-Northern video news program, for our social media platforms and for CBC\xe2\x80\x99s new streaming channel, Explore. As a multi-platform media outlet, you will also be asked to contribute to all our platforms, including audio and the web. You\xe2\x80\x99ll have opportunities to work on longer-term projects, to learn new skills and to grow, both professionally and personally.Your work will be governed by CBC\'s journalistic and broadcasting policy and protocols, ensuring that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.Based in Whitehorse, you will operate under the general direction of CBC Yukon\xe2\x80\x99s executive producer and assignment producer. You will also work closely with the editorial and production team of Northbeat.We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A demonstrated understanding of the Yukon and pan-Northern political and cultural landscapes.
  • Ability to solve problems independently and in-group discussions (openness to new ideas and approaches).
  • Initiative, flexibility, creativity and curiosity.
  • Experience with both cross-cultural and trauma-informed reporting.
  • A post-secondary degree or community college relevant course or study or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A portfolio of work demonstrating fluency as a visual journalist and experience working with video, camera and audio equipment, both with shooting and editing.
  • Experience with visual storytelling on social media.
  • Comfort working with new tools and technologies.
  • Knowledge of editing software like Adobe or Avid would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of lighting would be an asset.
  • A comfortable on-air presence.
  • An ability to generate original story ideas with both traditional and new broadcast storytelling techniques.
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and efficiently and meet multiple deadlines and handle multiple story chases.
  • Experience in booking interview guests, developing lines of questioning, writing focused introductions and preparing and writing tape segments.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Demonstrated writing skills.
  • Knowledge of web writing, writing scripts for TV, radio or news would be a strong asset.
  • Great attitude and interpersonal communication skills to engage with colleagues and with community members to
  • conduct on-camera interviews.
  • Must possess a valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, which may include unpredictable overtime situations, weekends and evenings, often independently and without supervision.
