The Opportunity Tacora seeks to appoint an accomplished and innovative leader to guide and lead Scully operations through the next phase of growth. Based in Wabush, Newfoundland and Labrador and reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), this opportunity will appeal to a confident leader with a penchant for advancing operational effectiveness, productivity, and performance through innovative new approaches and technology while looking at the operations from an aerial view. This person will have excellent people skills, capable of promoting a culture change that will be rooted in transparency, trust, teaming, collaboration, and empowerment. Key Responsibilities Leading a team of direct and indirect reports, the Vice President and General Manager, Scully Operations (VP/GM, Scully) is responsible for defining, developing, and implementing the strategies leading to the optimal and safe performance of the assets, he/she will also be responsible for developing and managing external stakeholder relationships including the local authorities, provincial government, and local communities. More specifically, the VP/GM Scully will have the following responsibilities: Safety

  • Integrate Health, Safety and Environment (\xe2\x80\x9cHSE\xe2\x80\x9d) guiding principles to ensure the safety of employees while protecting the environment.
  • Utilize expertise and leadership attributes to inspire and lead by example, on an ongoing basis.
  • Review key HSE KPIs on a regular basis; ensure HSE standards are being applied effectively and the operations follow HSE standards and legal requirements.
  • Ensure HSE responsibilities and authorities are defined and communicated within the organization effectively.
Operations
  • Developing achievable operating plans and consistently meeting or exceeding them. Ensuring year-over-year improvement in cost management, quality, safety, environmental responsibility, and asset utilization.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and management to ensure the business reaches its operating and financial goals as per plans and budgets.
  • Ensure effective management of resources to maximize productivity, work towards realizing the asset\xe2\x80\x99s full potential and ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the facilities.
  • Cultivate a climate of operational excellence by promoting continuous improvement initiatives across the various functions with the intent of increasing operational effectiveness and capital efficiency with an unyielding focus on maintaining world-class safety standards.
  • Coordinate the work and collaborate closely with business partners to develop asset strategies, objectives and plans that ensure operational effectiveness and the optimal use of Tacora\xe2\x80\x99s resources to deliver results that are aligned with annual and long-term plans.
  • Ensure clear and constant communication with the leadership team, on matters pertaining to operations activities, and ensure all functions that he/she is responsible for are operating together effectively to achieve the strategy.
Financial
  • Be responsible and accountable for the management of all financial resources of the Scully operations ensuring that proper controls, budgetary processes, reporting, and analysis procedures are in place.
  • Review and approve yearly CAPEX and OPEX budgets and be accountable for all expenses.
  • Identify priorities; ensure associated projects align with business objectives and budget availability; build supporting business cases when investment levels require them.
People Leadership
  • Build credibility and foster engagement of the current organization through open communication, inspiring leadership and by providing a mobilizing vision for Scully operations.
  • Build and develop a strong team employing a performance-based management system: develop and implement a succession plan to ensure ongoing stability and performance at all levels of the operation.
  • Mentor, coach, and direct staff through the establishment of stretch goals and cohesive teamwork with a participatory and inclusive leadership style, utilizing collaborative leadership strengths to foster positive cultural change and inclusive, team-oriented success.
  • Evaluate and provide feedback to managers transparently and regularly; mentor and develop the next generation of leaders. Reward and course correct as required.
  • Safeguard the wellbeing of employees, provide safety education, and promote awareness among employees.
  • Track the performance of direct reports and ensure employees are following through with commitments of organizational objectives.
  • Encourage and value diversity in workforce, upholding an inclusive workplace culture.
  • Create an environment where the sharing of best practices, innovative thinking, skills, and experience is encouraged.
External Stakeholder
  • Develop strong working relationships with governments, regulators, communities, and industries that enhance Tacora\xe2\x80\x99s reputation and enable favorable treatment and good citizenship wherever the company chooses to do business.
  • Maintain and extend the company\xe2\x80\x99s license to operate, carefully managing relationships with the union, provincial government, local authorities, and local communities.
  • Identify opportunities to collaborate with corporate citizens in the surrounding areas to capture potential synergies and/or to unite voices to ensure a conducive business environment.

  • Ensure the business unit meets or exceeds budgets and goals in safety, volume and cost while successfully managing planned levels of production.
  • Implement a high-performance organization, increasing attraction and retention and the skill levels of both professionals and the overall workforce through active engagement and building an inclusive, trust-based performance culture amongst all personnel.
  • Has elevated and strengthened key internal and external relationships including with local community leaders, union representatives, regulatory and government officials through exemplary and safe leadership of their operations.
Professional Experience / Qualifications The ideal profile for this role combines the following: Experience and Technical Skills
  • Fifteen-plus years\xe2\x80\x99 leadership experience in complex mining and processing operations; experience in primary metal or other smelting/ refining environments may be considered.
  • Proven track record of driving best practices, improving productivity and profitability throughout operations with leading-edge management practices, innovative use of technology, cost reduction strategies and high-quality investment decisions.
  • Exhibit a strong understanding of Business Improvement methodology and Value Maximization principles.
  • Experience in operating and capital budgeting with strong cost management skills; knowledge and understanding of financial controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve production and cost targets safely and efficiently.
  • Experience leading HSE in a complex, multi-faceted operational environment.
  • Proven ability to engage and build high-performing teams. A track record of success in managing, mentoring, coaching, and directing employees; experience developing staff and promoting business growth within the organization.
  • Proven change agent with quantifiable experience in planning and leading major changes; measurable success in continuous improvement initiatives and operational excellence.
  • Strong leadership skills with a successful track record of managing environmental, social, and political issues and regulatory relationships.

Education Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree is required, ideally in Business Management or Engineering.
