Job Description

T. Musselman Excavating is seeking an experienced Utility Foreman to lead our sewer and watermain construction projects across a variety of civil job sites. The Utility Foreman is responsible for overseeing daily operations, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with drawings and specifications.

This role involves project and crew coordination, mentoring team members, and maintaining open communication with project management and inspectors. The ideal candidate is a hands-on learner with strong technical knowledge of underground utilities, proven leadership skills, and a commitment to maintaining a safe and productive job site.

Duties and Responsibilities



Ensure all utility locates are on site, current, and reviewed with the crew prior to work commencing. Interpret and apply construction drawings, specifications, and design standards accurately. Maintain a working knowledge of Book 7, OPSS and OPSD standards Plan and achieve daily and weekly production targets in accordance with project schedules. Supervise utility construction activities in a variety of environments, including open field, ICI and reconstruction projects. Lead, train, and mentor crew members to promote safety, quality work, and efficient production. Collaborate with the Project Manager to understand project scope, specifications, and contractual requirements. Communicate regularly with Operations and Dispatch to coordinate materials, equipment, trucking, and manpower needs Accurately complete required documentation, including daily work tickets, Job Safety Analysis (JSA's), weekly safety talks, and site inspections. Attend and actively participate in project and site meetings. Operate construction equipment and perform labour duties as required to support the crew. Work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions. Adhere to all company health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures. Perform additional duties as required to support project needs.

Desired Skills and Experience



Minimum 5 years of experience working on sewer and watermain construction crews. Minimum 2 years of proven experience as a Foreman or Lead Hand in sewer and watermain installation. Demonstrated hands-on leadership with the ability to motivate, train, and mentor crew members. Proficient in reading and interpreting project plans, specifications, and construction drawings. Working knowledge of construction regulations, Book 7 traffic control, OPSS, and OPSD standards. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively with project managers, inspectors, and team members. Highly safety conscious with a strong commitment to maintaining an OHSA-compliant work environment. Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced construction environment. Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work to meet deadlines and production goals. Effective team player who can also work independently with minimal supervision. Physically capable of performing outdoor work in all weather conditions. Valid G license with a clean driving record is required; DZ license is considered an asset
