Campion and Luther College mathematics faculty create openly-licensed coursebooks to accompany introductory mathematics courses at the University of Regina. These open educational resources (OER) provide students in these courses with materials of zero cost or minimal cost (if printed) and provide all university faculty teaching sections of these courses the option of providing this core course material to students to meet their learning needs. The work for this summer project is funded by an OER grant and is aligned with the University of Regina\xe2\x80\x99s commitments to government and students to increase use of OER in our classrooms.

The undergraduate student hired in this position will work with the authors to augment our existing rudimentary coursebook for Calculus II (Math 111) to make it a stand-alone resource for students. Duties of the student hired will include:

• Learning the open-source authoring tools (LaTeX, etc.) required to work on the document.
• Formatting of fully worked examples hand-written by the authors into the mathematical language in which the coursebook is written.
• Checking for any errors (mathematical and typographical) as well as ensuring consistency in notation with the rest of the work.
• Creating an index for the coursebook using the standard tools provided by the authoring system.
• Creating graphs and diagrams to accompany the book using open-source tools as directed by the authors (as time permits).
• Regular meetings with one or more authors for guidance and feedback.

Position Requirements

• Registered in undergraduate full-time studies at the University of Regina at the time of application and for the fall semester.
• Faculty of science students in 3rd or 4th year preferred.
• Proven excellence in mathematics including completion of MATH 110, 111, and 122 (or equivalents).
• Demonstrable writing proficiency including good grammar and attention to detail.
• Familiarity with authoring text on a computer including good keyboarding skills.
• Ability to learn publishing software tools as required.
• Independent worker but also able to work collaboratively with supervisors.
• Good organization and time management skills.

Physical Demands Pay Grade As Per CUPE 2419 Salary Range $16.15-$19.70 Status Term Work Hours
