Working for the Faculty of Nursing




The Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta is one of the largest nursing faculties in the country, and unique as the only Canadian member of the National Hartford Centers for Gerontological Nursing Excellence. We have more doctorally-prepared faculty members than any other school in the west. As a pioneer in Canadian nursing education, we implemented the first Master of Nursing program in Western Canada in 1975, and began the first fully-funded Nursing PhD program in Canada in 1991.

Position




As an Undergraduate Academic Advisor within the Faculty of Nursing, you'll play a vital role in guiding students through their academic journey, helping them navigate complex decisions with confidence. You'll be the go-to expert for tackling non-routine queries, from course selection to understanding academic policies, ensuring students make informed choices every step of the way.


You'll assess applications based on established procedures, and provide clear guidance on degree requirements, academic standing, deadlines, and the acceptance of exchange or transfer credits. Monitoring student registrations and keeping track of students who are out of sequence will also be part of your responsibilities, ensuring that all students stay on track with their academic goals.


Additionally, you'll provide advice on academic exchanges and course transfers, offering students opportunities to broaden their horizons. And when life outside the classroom presents challenges, you'll be there to listen, providing advice and connecting students to the resources they need for support.

Duties




Application Assessment

Processes applications for program admission from inquiry to decision stage. Ensures completeness of required information. Conducts admissions reporting, including collecting and analyzing data to inform decision making processes. Evaluates and makes decisions on applications for admission ensuring program admission requirements are met. Evaluates domestic and international credentials. Participates in documentation and procedure development. Conducts research into the credit and course level systems for institutions and courses that have not yet been evaluated; develops and maintains a database of international and domestic transfer credit decisions.

Program Advising (Post-Acceptance)

Advises continuing and prospective students on program related matters such as: advising on academic standing, providing GPA calculations and scenarios, advising on program changes, advising on potential transfer credit and performing advanced program planning. Identifies, assesses, refers and advocates for students at risk. Provides students with information about alternatives, limitations and possible consequences of academic decisions.

Program Decisions

Approves/denies program decisions such as: course-overload applications, requests for program interruption or deceleration, change of route, deferred examination applications, transfer credits, requests for student abroad and exchange programs.

Convocation/Program Completion

Completes convocation clearing for graduates to ensure full degree requirements are met. Verifies program completion and certifies to the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) students can write the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and receive their Temporary Practice Permits to legally work in Canada. Advises students of any program deficiencies and the consequences.

Minimum Qualifications



Undergraduate degree and/or a diploma in an appropriate area demonstrated with experience in course administration. Minimum 2 years experience with program/administrative coordination. Thorough understanding of databases and database integrity procedures is necessary. Strong knowledge of University policies and procedures, affiliated partners and University business and academic scheduling procedures. Problem solving and troubleshooting is necessary. Able to work in a team setting, as well as independently. Able to organize oneself efficiently and effectively. Able to meet tight deadlines and able to recognize timelines of other areas. Excellent at clearly communicating with various parties (externally and internally) using a variety of methods including phone, remote, email, and in-person. Familiarity and good understanding of the principles and practices of providing excellent customer service and ability to implement these principles and practices in a positive, encouraging manner. Able to work in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications



Experience with PeopleSoft (student). Experience with University Academic Calendar and Campus Solutions. Experience with data monitoring. Training in mental health and suicide prevention (Mental Health First Aid, ASSIST Training).
