This program works towards developing a greater understanding of Aboriginal culture and perspectives on teaching and learning, primarily in schools where Aboriginal children are learning. Our goal is to improve the educational experiences of Aboriginal children by increasing the number of Aboriginal teachers in communities all over Alberta.Working as an Academic Advisor in the Aboriginal Teacher Education ProgramThe Academic Advisor provides a first point of contact for current and prospective students, and provides accurate delivery of information on academic program requirements, deadlines, and university/faculty policies and procedures. Working as part of a team to ensure that students in ATEP succeed, thrive, and advance through their programs, the Advisor refers complex issues/concerns to more senior staff.The Advisor determines student course selection and registration, and makes decisions on :

  • the satisfying of degree requirements;
  • academic standing;
  • academic deadlines;
  • and the acceptability of exchange and/or transfer credit.
The Advisor may provide advice on academic exchanges or course transfers. The Advisor may be called on to assess student life issues or refer students to other resources. The Advisor escalates to their supervisor issues that may affect the success of a student or are outside of decision-making authority.DutiesThe advisor handles tasks in the following areas:
  • Prospective advising, which includes but is not limited to advising prospective students on their potential programs, advanced standing, and the application process, and attending recruitment events
  • Application assessment, which includes but is not limited to processing applications, evaluating applications, evaluating applicants\' credentials and records, creating and managing communications with applicants, and liaising with the Office of the Registrar
  • Program advising (post-acceptance), which includes but is not limited to monitoring student progress, building program planning documents, providing students with information and interpreting university policy and regulations, and registering students in their courses
  • Program decision and completion, which includes but is not limited to approving overloads and transfer credit, exceptions, clearing students for convocation, and reviewing academic records for completeness
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s degree
  • Experience working with Aboriginal students
  • Understanding and possession of a strong knowledge base of issues pertinent in Indigenous communities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated understanding of the cultural knowledge and perspective required to connect with Indigenous communities, schools and students, plus knowledge of Treaty 6 communities is an asset
  • The ability to speak and communicate in any Indigenous language is considered an asset
  • Training and experience with university administrative systems in student administration, including PeopleSoft/Campus Solutions, Electronic Document Records Management/Alfresco and the Undergraduate Admission System (Slate)
