Trip Leader Gay Adventure Travel (international)

Vancouver, BC, Canada

Job Description

b'

Detours is the largest operator of LGBTQ+ tours (by number of trips per year), operating 8 to 13-day flexible-style group tours in 21 countries. We\xe2\x80\x99re currently looking for one more trip leader (we just hired 3!) who will embrace our unique concept and add to our existing team of 8 fantastic trip leaders. Our trip leaders (who are not tour guides, those are hired locally in each destination), are the backbone of the success of each trip, keeping our very diverse groups of up to 16 travelers smiling through all kinds of things that the unpredictability of travel can throw at them. WHAT TO EXPECT Our trip leaders are out there on the front lines with our guests, zip-lining through the Costa Rican jungle, leading a hike along the cliffs of Santorini, showing off the gay nightlife in Bangkok\xe2\x80\xa6 but a trip leader\xe2\x80\x99s life isn\xe2\x80\x99t all glitz and glamour. A trip leader is, at unexpected times, thrown into the role of a photographer, therapist, friend, miracle-worker, and problem solver \xe2\x80\x93 sometimes all at the same time, in the non-stop pouring rain, at the side of a broken-down bus \xe2\x80\x93 and expected to maintain that happy-go-lucky optimistic attitude through it all. It\xe2\x80\x99s not a role for just anybody. It\xe2\x80\x99s a role for the most unflappable, glass-half-full, quick-thinking problem solvers that walk among us. Your responsibilities include:
  • Keeping the group itinerary running smoothly and on-time
  • Problem-solving issues that may arise with travelers and/or suppliers (hotels, transfers, local guides, etc)
  • Ensuring the happiness and high level of satisfaction of all guests, to the best of your ability
  • Coordinating a range of daily activities in the interest of your guests
  • Communicating with office staff regarding overall trip successes and suggestions for trip improvements
  • Keeping a detailed expense report, to be submitted at the end of each trip for reimbursement
  • Ensure a high level of knowledge of your destination\xe2\x80\x99s current events, cultural norms, and local sites of interest (will include restaurants, bars, etc)
You should be available during the following dates (including travel time to/from). Throughout 2023 you can expect the following schedule (subject to change), with trips increasing to ~14+ (or less, depending on preference) from 2024 onwards: PERU; May 3 \xe2\x80\x93 14 (training) PERU; May 16 \xe2\x80\x93 27 (lead) PERU; July 1 \xe2\x80\x93 12 (lead) SCANDINAVIA; July 14 \xe2\x80\x93 24 (training) SCANDINAVIA; July 25 \xe2\x80\x93 August 4 SCANDINAVIA; August 23 \xe2\x80\x93 September 2 PERU; October 14 \xe2\x80\x93 25
OTHER DESTINATIONS you may be trained on and lead in;
  • CENTRAL EUROPE (Budapest, Prague & Berlin)
  • COSTA RICA
  • PORTUGAL
  • ITALY
  • THAILAND
  • CAMBODIA
  • NEW ZEALAND
  • EGYPT
  • SOUTH AFRICA
  • MOROCCO
We take great care and pride in who joins our team here at Detours, and so while you might start with these destinations in your first year, it\xe2\x80\x99s your work ethic, availability, guest feedback and personal travel experience that can take you all over the world with us. We\xe2\x80\x99re looking for someone who wants a career with us, and is 100% guest-focused, not someone who is just looking for \xe2\x80\x98a job that pays to travel\xe2\x80\x99.
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
  • An incredible amount of patience, sometimes in stressful environments.
  • A flexible schedule; the scheduling of this position can be quite sporadic and not full time as we coordinate high/low seasons, other trip leader schedules, and guest demand. You should have other work to supplement the many parts of the year when you are not leading our trips.
  • Travel experience; specific experience traveling in at least a couple of our Detours destinations is preferred, but not a requirement.
  • Availability for all above-noted trips.
  • The social ability to excel in long days in a very social environment.
  • The physical ability to lead active-style trips, including some long days with plenty of activity.
  • The type of personality that has a genuine interest in all types of diverse people. You don\'t need to have an "A" type personality to excel at this role, but you do need to be a people-person and love working with people from all parts of the world, with all backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Comfortable with our guest demographic (99% gay men)
  • Other language skills are a bonus (especially Spanish), but not mandatory.
