Job Description

Toolmaker/CNC Operator position is primarily responsible for operating various cutting machine tools, varying from fully manual operation to completely automated computer numerical controlled (CNC) machining centers. Position also requires planning, fabricating and manufacturing dies, patterns and gauges of extreme complexity and computer data entry skills. Knowledge of investment casting die splitting, CNC machine programing and NX program is an asset.

Typical Duties
1. Analyzes machining requirements and determines best economical options.
2. Performs all set-ups of equipment and molds utilizing knowledge of machine shop practices and procedures.
3. Installs proper cutting tools into the machine tool, according to the machining operation.
4. Performs complex machining using horizontal lathes, vertical mills, and surface grinders.
5. Reads tolerancing diagrams and operates gauges to assure proper tolerances.
6. Reads 2D drawing/sketches 3D conceptual instructions.
7. Prepares material for CNC machining with CNC Machine operator's cooperation.
8. Periodically operates CNC Machines.
9. Performs complex machining using horizontal lathes, vertical mills, and surface grinders.
10. Plans the repair or modifications of complex molds and repairs or modifies as required.
11. Repairs damaged dies, gauges and fixtures per instructions.
12. Manufactures fixtures and tools from rough sketches and technical drawings.
13. Performs precise machining operations/repairs on castings that cannot be machined by other departments.
14. Uses a variety of precision inspection instruments and equipment.
15. Inspects dies/inserts for conformance to established specifications.
16. Sets up and sharpens drills, tool bits, and contour cutters.
17. Follows tool work order requests per engineering instructions.
18. Requests and reviews the quotes for supplies including material, cutting tools, safety equipment and other materials for Tool Room, FTP & CNC Gate Machining Departments.
19. Prepares material requisition in Oracle and follows up the orders.
20. Opens and closes complete orders in MP2 Program. Prints codded orders for other operators in Tool Room.
21. Maintains work area in a clean and safe condition.
