The Opportunity
Reporting the Manager of Sales and Operations, the
Textile Apprentice
position is an opportunity to learn and grow within a supportive textile production environment on Fogo Island. This role is focused on developing hands-on skills in sewing, embroidery, mending, and other textile techniques while actively contributing to the creation of high-quality textile goods. The apprentice will play a key part in supporting day-to-day production and maintaining a professional workspace, while also engaging with visitors and being part of a larger community of makers. This position is ideal for someone eager to build their skills, contribute meaningfully to a growing textile practice, and help strengthen local capacity for craft on Fogo Island.
What You'll Do
Support textile production through hands-on learning and skill development in sewing, embroidery, and mending
Assemble textile products such as cushions, following established patterns and quality guidelines Learn and participate in quality control processes to ensure consistency and craftsmanship
Learn proper care and maintenance of sewing and textile equipment, and take responsibility for keeping tools in good condition
Maintain a clean, organized, and professional workspace at all times
Engage with guests who visit the workshop by sharing information about your work and the textile production process
Approach tasks with curiosity and a willingness to learn new skills and techniques
Collaborate with other team members and contribute to a supportive, creative work environment
Qualifications and Experience
High School Diploma or GED equivalence
A basic understanding of textile craft is ideal including operation of a domestic sewing machine.
