Overview:
This is an apprentice position located in Fort Simpson, NT.


The apprentice participates as a member of the Transmission & Distribution Group and performs Journeyperson level work in the construction and maintenance of electrical transmission and distribution systems, including substations underground and streetlight systems. Working safely as a Team Member, ensures the safety of other employees, contractors and the general public. Restores transmission and distribution systems when there is a power disturbance failure. Replacing and /or repairing defective power lines and accessories. Completes pole and conductor replacements on distribution Transmission systems throughout the NWT Power Corporation. (120v to 115KV). Completes customer service meter readings, constructs single phase and three phase transmission and distribution lines (5KV to 115KV). Includes installation of three phase transformer banks. Cleans, maintains and stocks line vehicles, yards and storage buildings.
  • Must be able to provide proof of education level:
    • Must have graduated with a High School Diploma (or GED-equivalent) with a MINIMUM passing grade in each of the following courses: English 20-2 (or Literacy 30) and Science 10, AND a MINIMUM of 70% passing grade in Math 10C (or Math 20-3) - you must be able to provide school transcripts that reflect this upon screening;
OR show that you have already received a MINIMUM passing mark of 70% or higher on the NWT Trades Entrance Exam #2 - you must be able to provide transcripts upon screening.
  • Must be willing & able to live in/relocate to Fort Simpson and obtain your own rental accommodations within a reasonable period of time.
  • Must be willing & able to travel to other locations throughout the NWT for various periods of time (days/weeks).
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather.
  • Must be able to travel to attend college for applicable training/exams throughout the four-year apprenticeship, as required.
  • Must be able to obtain a Class 3 license during the apprenticeship period.
Responsibilities:
  • Working safely as a team member, ensure safety of fellow employees, contractors and general public.
  • Restores power to transmission and distribution systems when there is a power failure.
  • Repairing or replacing defective power lines.
  • Complete pole and conductor replacements on transmission and distribution lines.
  • Completes customer service work orders.
  • Constructs single and three phase distribution lines, installations of transformers and service connections.
  • Clean and maintain line tools and equipment, stock line trucks.
  • Able to travel to other locations throughout NWT via road, winter road, or small plane.
  • Able to work in adverse weather.
  • Other responsibilities as outlined in job description.
Qualifications:
  • Must have graduated with a High School Diploma (or GED-equivalent) with a MINIMUM passing grade in each of the following courses: English 20-2 (or Literacy 30) and Science 10, AND a MINIMUM of 70% passing grade in Math 10C (or Math 20-3) - you must be able to provide school transcripts that reflect this upon screening;

**If you do not currently have copies of your diploma and school transcripts, please request them from the applicable school or ECE as you are required to provide these upon screening**
  • Must be a team player, with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must have good planning, organizational and communications skills.
  • Must pay close attention to detail, analyze, and solve problems.
  • Must have a strong commitment to safety and safe working practices.
  • This job requires freedom of movement and physical strength to perform strenuous work that requires frequent heavy lifting, carrying and reaching. Getting to power lines may require climbing poles or towers, working from a bucket attached to an aerial lift boom and entering underground locations.
  • Must be willing & able to travel to other locations throughout the NWT for periods of time (days/weeks).
  • Must be able to travel to/attend college for periods of time as part of the apprenticeship program.
  • Must have a valid NWT full Class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license (with no restrictions), with the ability to obtain a Class 3 with air-brake endorsement during apprenticeship.
  • Must be able to provide a satisfactory criminal record check.
  • Must be able to provide at least two supervisory references.



This position is located in Fort Simpson, NT.
Salary for this position starts at the apprentice rate of $28.44/hr. and increases as the apprenticeship progresses (as per Collective Agreement); in addition, there is a location allowance of approximately $6,184 per year. We offer a comprehensive benefits package which includes health and dental benefits, disability insurance, life insurance, paid sick days and a defined benefits pension plan. Relocation assistance may be provided, however you must be able to secure your own rental accommodtions within a reasonable period of time.
