Responsibilities

OVERALL PURPOSE



The Test Technologist (Electrical) is responsible for assisting Maintenance Engineering in the preparation of engineering sketches, design reports, technical specifications, test procedures, analysis of equipment/system performance data and providing technical support in performing tests.



MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



Works within established procedures and follows approved technical methods in designing and supervision.


Designing and supervising fabrication of prototype equipment and test apparatus with high degree of innovation and creative ability.

Developing non-destructive examination method for equipment.

Reviewing and updating equipment/subsystem maintenance manuals.

Preparing information procedures and instructions to help the Maintenance/Operations personnel prepare request for service.



Works independently or under the direction of Maintenance Engineering to prepare detail costs estimates, material selection, manpower requirement and schedule for an assigned project.



Completes assigned tasks to Company or industry standards using approved work practices and procedures.



Performs in-depth on-line troubleshooting and repair of equipment subsystems in areas of responsibility.



Prepares test procedures and test requirements to be performed by himself/herself and/or Test Technicians for the purpose of investigating into the causes of equipment/subsystem failure or evaluating system performance level.



Prepares design sketches or shop drawing for prototype or upgraded equipment or subsystems.



Performs engineering and scientific calculations using state-of-art computerized facilities.



Understands the purpose and operation of systems and makes recommendations for hardware or procedural changes that become evident during analysis of system performance data and fault reports.



Marks up drawings showing changes made or discrepancies found. Initiates formal drawing or document changes with the Document Control Department.



Performs hands-on operation of specialized test equipment such as data loggers, oscillographic records, analogue and digital storage scopes, sound level equipment, waveform analysers and vibration monitors, and will analyse the test data collected in the field by himself/herself and/or the Test Technicians.



Develops and prepares technical course material for instructing Maintenance or Operations staff of any specialized prototype equipment/system operation and provides technical information to Test Group in the operations of specialized test equipment.



Uses tools, gauges and other appropriate instruments to:

Fabricate prototype devices;

Perform quality inspection of vendor supplied materials; and

Perform hands-on field tests.



Prepares material/service purchases requisitions for an assigned project.



Accounts for all materials used and services rendered by outside agencies in accomplishing the assignment.



Attends technical and safety training programs to continually upgrade skills.



Operates a motor vehicle with a valid BC driver's license.



Handles emergencies and failures in accordance with established procedures through immediate response and quick action.



Performs other related duties as assigned, such being items of a minor nature which do not affect the value of the job.



SAFETY REQUIREMENTS



As per WorkSafeBC regulations, this job requires an annual fit test and may necessitate the use of a respirator. In either case, the employee must be clean shaven. Any exemption requests should be raised to Occupational Health and/or Labour Relations for consideration.


Qualifications

EDUCATION



The incumbent must have graduated from a recognized institute of technology majoring in the electrical/electronic disciplines.



Valid class 5 BC driver's license.



EXPERIENCE



Four (4) years hands-on experience in troubleshooting, testing; commissioning and start-up of equipment or systems, of which two (2) years must be in construction and installation of power distribution, communication and electronic systems.



Two (2) years of design experience in an engineering environment.



Experience in the operation of test equipment such as strip chart recorder, oscilloscopes, data acquisition apparatus, acoustic and vibration analysers and programmable controller are a definite requirement.



Good working knowledge in the use of personal computers for scientific application is a must.



Good verbal and written communication skills is also a must.



Eligibility for registration with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians (ASTT of BC) as a technologist.

Recruitment Process: An applicant will be required to demonstrate their suitability for this position by meeting the minimum level of qualifications and experience in order to be invited into the selection process. A standard interview format will be used including general, scenario and behavioural descriptive interview questions.

Rate of Pay

Wage: $62.72 per hour



Please note: All new employees will be subject to a 6-week trainee rate at 75% of the hourly rate with the remainder of the first year at 90% of the hourly rate.
